My MIL thinks that each sin is equal...for example if you kill someone, it's the same as lying to your mother. What do you think of that? Besides my MIL being a loon, of course.

Well, the point is, any sin will keep you out of heaven if you have not been forgiven through Jesus Christ, if you have not put your faith in Him and accepted His free gift of salvation.
ANY SIN- that means one lie can keep you out from God's presence just as murdering someone will.
BUT everyone will be judged differently-- according to what they have done. Revelation 20 is a good chapter on that.
Revelation 20:13
The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.

The consequences of all sin is death be it wickedness or unrighteousness. Doing is wicked, thinking unrighteous. Isaiah 55:7. Generally judgement comes sooner on the lower end of the scale; else all us liars would be dead long before we could murder anyone, like MIL

But take care. Judgement starts with God's people and not with the heathen. The upshot is that both you and your MIL have a point. But it is not quite God's point.

In Ez. 33: 12 to 20, God sets down the conduct of judgement on thought and deed. Read it close. The people in that day and the people in this usually feel it is unfair and unequal.

What matters is not the individual seriousness of each sin on some kind of score sheet. What matters is the effect which the sin has on our character and on our relationship with God. A small thing can destroy a human friendship, as you know from your own experience. A small sin, if it has the effect of driving a wedge between you and God, can be just as devastating to your character as a big sin. Jesus could seem inconsistent by our human standards, severely condemning someone for selling doves outside the temple, while forgiving a murderer on the cross. He wasn't looking at the size of the sin, but at the heart of the sinner.

Your MIL is correct. The wages of sin--any sin, is death. That is physical and spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God. People who believe themselves better than others, because they haven't killed anyone, are sadly deluded. You can kill a person with your lies. You can steal a persons heart away and toss it aside, so who is the worst offender? Neither one. Now, go and give your MIL a well-deserved HUG!

Be nice to your MIL....someday soon, you'd be one yourself.

Here's what I honestly believe about sins:

It's any infraction to what my God has commanded me to do. Sins come in varying degrees --- some more grievous than others. Lying, altho still a sin (more correctly, a venial sin), is not to be equated with murder (killing someone), which is categorized as mortal sin. Murder is immoral both in the eyes of God and Humanity (our legal system).

This is my belief. I am not enforcing this on anyone nor am I looking to debate anyone. I am merely answering your question as truthfully as I can.

Mankind has seemingly ranked sin in order of "wrongness". Like a little white lie isnt as bad as raping someone. Not that I disagree with mans rational, but the truth of the matter is that all sin is equally offensive to God. Its a very difficult concept for our limited minds to grasp. (at least for mine). What i do believe is this, when I stand before God and my sins are recoutned, Jesus will step up, one by one, showing his nail pierced hands and feet, and say that He has already paid the price for that sin...move on to the next.

I firmly believe that sin is an equalizer .its all filth to God .and he can not look upon it.his word says to break one point is to be in err to the whole.Jesus came to cover that sin because we were hopeless without his sacrifice.before i was saved i was headed for hell,I lived a full life of sin.you could definitly look at my life and see sin evident, and be correct in believing I deserved Hell. But Gods word says you can live a good life .yet if you harbor resentment towards someone, still go to hell. All is lost.If you dont have Jesus.
it,s harder to see sin in some people, let alone understand they are hell bound same as i was.But Gods word says this is true. "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." and "the wages of sin is death."
we all tend to fall into the i,m not as bad that person.when i do that I have to remind myself that i,m only under Gods grace because of Christ,s sacrifice.

How many sins does it take to prevent a person from going to Heaven?

One.

In the eyes of God, all sin is rebellion against Him, and He doesn't distinguish between degrees.

One sin can keep you out of Heaven, and that is why we need a Savior. That is why Jesus came.

As it is written: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23)

And

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

Sin is sin.

In the old testament, that was true. You broke even one litle law, and you might as well have broken them all.

Christians in these new covenant times operate under grace, not law.

We trust in the mercy of God for forgiveness and/or just judgment, and God certainly knows the difference between murder and a fib.

Yes breaking 1 commandment is equal to breaking all of them. Lying and disobaying your parents are both addressed in Gods law that was given to Moses.
