I was thinking of taking him to a baseball game or out for a nice dinner. I think the game might be less stressful. It's not like he probibly won't know its coming anyways though!

I would say that you can call him up and let him know that you had something that you needed to talk to him about. Ask him if he would like to get together soon maybe for a meal or drinks. A game may be too loud, and for something like that you need it a bit low key- now if you were asking her at that time then yeah- get it written across the scoreboard. but since it is only to ask for allowance- i say the more low key the better. You may also want to include her mother as well, since that will be a huge part of her life as well that will be changing.
Get all of your ducks in a row- dads like to know how you will support their daughter, raise a family, your goals and what not. Dont just go in there and say hey Bob- i want to marry Jenny- is that cool with you?
Here is an idea- have your FIL to be meet you at your house (or you go to his). Tell him that you wanted to give his daughter a video that you made about her life but you wanted him to watch it just in case you missed something. Start the video very nonchalantly- with her picture showing, talk a bit about the person whe is. Get a little deeper and say that she is the best woman in the world and there is so many things that she has to offer the world. Say tings about her importance and how lucky you are. Then change frame to where it shows you. Talk to the dad via video camera- letting him know that you cant imagine spending one more moment without knowing that she will be by your side forever and will he give you permission to marry his daughter. Tell him everything that there is to know- and especially point out your good qualities.
He should say ok.

I would suggest inviting him out to dinner and just be honest with him. Let him know how you feel about his daughter and that you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her. Tell him you wanted to speak to him first and ask for her hand because you felt that was the proper way to proceed.
Save the game for another day, after he says o.k.!!!

the baseball game sounds really good! It will give you a bigger chance to bond some more and get on his good side. Plus it sounds really classic.
