Science Diet Lite or Iams. The bag has specific instructions concerning how much to feed an animal. My cat gets 3/4 cup a day.

Don't switch to light foods or foods like Hills, all they have done it taken away meat and add in more grains,
Grains are carbs, which the body converts to sugar and goes on as fat also puts dogs at risk of diabetes.

You need a good quality meat based food low in carbs and reduce feeding amount until weight starts to come off, exercise will help to tone the dog up and improve the metabolism so more calories are burned

I have had really good outcomes with Nutro Natural Choice Lite Adult formula. I had a Vizlsa mix who got kinda chubby last year and I put her on the Lite formula and she slimmed up alot in just a few weeks! (she now lives with other family member since she did not get along with my female rhodesian ridgeback) This is also avaliable in "small bites", which I highly recommend for your min. pin. because the breed is succeptable to crunching down on bigger kibbles and chipping teeth or having them fall out completely over the years. This food is good because unlike a lot of other lite formulas that leave out vitamins and minerals that dogs need in order to make the dog loose weight they keep them in the food. Just like humans, you just need to research the right food to help your dog loose the weight. Also this formula has the option to maintain the lost weight after he gets where you want him to be. I posted a link for you below. Good Luck! :)

If he's on a good quality, dry dog food now, there's no need to change it. Just feed him a little less of it, do not give him any people food, and drastically cut down on all snacks.

The other thing that's essential for his heart is that he be exercised every day. Just be careful you don't overdo it when you start - just like a person, you need to build up his stamina.

Less food and lots of exercise, just like you'd do for a person.
