I'm 17, lived in SF all my life, and I'm thinking of moving to New York City when I'm 18. What are some main differences in the city? How is the atmosphere different? What would a SF native have difficulty adjusting to in NY?

Well statistically about 1 of every 3 people in SF are Asian, and about 1 of every 5 males in SF are gay. Despite those facts crime rates in NYC are about half as high, that just shows what nice little wusses New Yonkers are. So I guess SF has higher crime rates, more gays, statistically more Homeless, and too many Asians, SF also has Mexicans weather NYC has Puerto Ricans. The only thing better about SF is the weather which isn't too great either. Both cities are soft but believe it or not NYC is softer. Go to New York it wont be that hard.

I have felt there are more homeless prevalent in SF than NYC. I also felt more uncomfortable in the Tenderloin district during broad day light than i did in the Red Hook projects. SF is a great city with damp weather than never changes. NYC is a city of flux. Weather is always changing. If you enjoy the seasons and city life with endless possibilities, then NYC is for you. If I had to live in another US city, it would be SF and then maybe Chicago. But at 18 you really need to have a good deal of $$ in NY. Its tough to move into NY but once you do, its tough to leave too!

I agree with babylon for the most part, and have to add that driving in Manhattan is a horror, and your pretty much guaranteed to get at least one ticket per day. either parking, or not following road signs that hang 21 feet in the air. I've tried and I've tried but I have not be able to drive ticket free in nyc for more than a week. I've given up my car and I use the metro, Much easier to get around, once again i need to point out the parking horror, this is an absolute night mare, you will be hard pressed to find parking and when you can't ( which will be most of the time, the average parking will cost you about 11 dollars Per Hour !! Don't drive in NYC, catch the metro

nyc weather is too cold in winter too hot in summer too rainy in spring and just like Sf in fall. SF is smaller than nyc there are more cultural differances in nyc than sf its faster than sf more sophisticated and lots more to see. it's worth the adventure if only for a year.
