I am from the eastern part of the globe, travelled wide, lived in many countries including the US. US is a great country, perhaps the present leadership has tarnished the image in the world today. It takes a long time to made a place in the world, but it takes a small act to tarnish the whole image. I wonder how US is going to work on this in the future.
What i admire about the US is they have the best knowledge on practically many things, they are a super flop when it came to middle east policy. I would say they lost a golden chance of handling the people of the middle east. I sometimes dont believe what US is doing in the middle east.
Leave alone the leadership, Americans are great people, i surely dont have anything to say against the americans, they are knowledgeable easy to talk to, very open, live and let live attitude, a free country, they allow new ideas, in fact they allow every religion to survive and practice. I love to see how accountability and responsibility is put to use. I sometimes wish the world is like america.
What i dont like about America is people are lonely, one does not trust the other, privacy is utmost to the point the neighbors dont know each other. Every one wants their space, and in doing so space has become a desert and people find themselves lonely in the desert. Neigbourly relations is nil. If i share my cooking with my neighbour, my neighbour travels to Manhattan to get a thank you card to leave it at my door step. I told my husband wish she could have said thank you personally, i would have enjoyed it.
Development has taken a different toll! The old are lonely, their life is framed in pictures, albums, and gifts recieved on birthdays. Meals are on wheels, grandchildren live in photoes, and they all meet on two or three occasions in a year.
DEVELOPMENT ?????

Generally I like Americans as individuals, and as the "mouse sleeping beside the elephant" one has to be mindful of their economic and military power. I admire the work ethic, and the pursuit of "the American Dream", however much a myth that actually is. But Americans LOOOOVE their mythology.

Americans truly believe they are the greatest nation that ever was, which to those of us outside the country is quaint and amusing. The Romans felt that way too, and became complacent.

As a group they are harder to take. Sorry, but a lot of the cliches about the "ugly" American are true. Loud, boorish, arrogant, over-patriotic and jingoistics, war-like. The "my country right or wrong" attitude that has the country in an almost perpetual state of war. The near-deification of awful people like Donald Trump. Manifest Destiny and other abominations of conceit. The "Coca-cola-ization of the world.

The current government?
Lets just say you get the government you deserve.

* American people I've met in person have been pretty decent and considerate.
* Your freedom of religion is good
* There's a dynamism that is inspirational
* I think most peoples admire your standard of living
* I do have some doubts about how USA treats the less fortunate, but that may be just supposition.
* I think that, like us Brits used to be, the "Establishment" are proud, because of economic and military power your country has. I'd rather you were the superpower than Germany, Japan or Russia though.

I'm from Canada.

I love the United States. They're passionate and strong and they get involved in life. An American never does things half way because its not in their nature.

They are also generally incredibly maddeningly arrogant and butt their noses in where they don't belong.

My husband, and all his family and friends, are American. I've spent many many years with Americans and even lived there myself for 6 months and I'm working on moving there for good because my husband and I know we can make the most money there.

And remember, you asked me what I think.

I well and truly love the US and its people. I just think that the arrogance needs to stop because its effecting the country in very bad ways and I don't like to see how much its hurting the country. The people don't deserve whats been happening to them but they quite honestly bring it on themselves.

Melissa, are you prepared for the depth of the nasty feelings people are having these days?

Individually I know many smart and savvy Americans that I like however there is a general overbearing mentality mixed with religious and racial intolerance that boggles the mind of the modern world. Priorities are skewed so that while men die in service to their country, the country is fed on celebrity news. Scapegoats are ripe for the slaughter and the true genocidal bas tards are sitting pretty in the highest office in your land.

I'm Irish. I know that Americans vary widely from very decent, kind and intelligent (they've had their moments) people, to unintelligent (just look at Bush!), arrogant and hostile people.
But I guess every country is the same in that respect. You get extremes on both sides everywhere.
America has both its good sides and its bad, just like everywhere. And even though a lot of bad things have come from the US, you have to admit, a lot of good has also come from it.

I dislike the United States as a political and economic power. This is basically because the US wants and does interfere in many things it shouldn't the world over. We feel unfree as nations. On the other hand, I love Americans. They are one of my favorite peoples. I like the variety and acceptance they have. They are friendly and very respectful (at least, most of them are).

Does an American dual citizen count? I've lived in the US and another country, and currently live in the US.

Americans are like little children. They love immediate gratification, are completely self-centered, will bend over backwards to help with immediate problems, and have no attention span.

Canada.

You come off as a bunch of arrogant idiots who have no idea about anything except the Americanized version of the world. You push your lofty ideals on everyone else while your nation rots around you.

Example - arguing over words on a coin?

Now having said that - I've met many fine Americans - the ones that really drive me insane are my fellow christians. (Come on folks - listen to yourselves.)

the US seems stuck in puberty. overly agressive and violent, sexually terrified and insecure, fervent in its belief in jesus the magic zombie. Bush personifies the childish ignorance so well, its difficult to imagine that not all americans are like that - but then, he's the one americans want running their country.
