Go out and buy a thumb drive with 1 gig or more of space. Using the computer you made this question with, insert the thumb drive and learn how to put Linux on it. Plug the thumb into your computer and you'll be able to boot up from it. Here's a website that can help you with that:

booting from the cd was not an option back then
you need a startup floppy disk for win 95 .they are available in .iso or floppy image...so goto bootdisk.com grab a bootdisk image for win 95 and learn how to use it....

As far as the linux distro .. why did you mention win 95?
did you check to make sure you linux distro is made to work on your old laptop? if it does then choose the function key pertaining to boot menu at atartup...sometimes it is not F12 but F11 or the Esc key
keep your eyes open at post and watch for the prompt for which key opens the boot menu and with your linux distro in the cd tray choose boot the cdrom or maybe it will say atapi device..either way...GL and do more research for yourself using the key words here and on the site where you got the linux distro.

linux wants more than one partition by the way, one for sys files and one for the virtual memory(pagefile).

Forget WINDOWS95./98/ME etc.
go for XP Home, pro or mutimedia ( about $ 100 I think )
or the latest Vista.
Insert the CD and install.
To boot LINUX OS, you have to use a different partition. say D:
