My GF has 2 medium sized dogs(75 pounds) and sometime in between now and Oct, we will probably have to find them a new home. See, in Oct we are moving to a different state and staying with a friend til we find jobs and a place of our own. But the person we will be staying with has cats and it wont work. My GF is really heart broken about the thought of having to do this(so am I).. and is really worried about them going to a bad home. I wanted to know if there was any advise any of you could give on this ? Thanks in advance.

1 is a Pitbull. and the other is a pitbull mix. I didnt put this in the original because most are very judemental towards that breed. But these are 2 VERY loving dogs. Far from the monsters ignorant people make them out to be.

If it can't be avoided then start looking now and be really picky. Try to find someone you know and try to place the dogs well before you move so if something isn't working out right you can take them back and try again.

Talk to family and friends first and see if you can find someone who is interested and trustable that way. If not then advertise online, in local papers etc. If you don't want to ask for money ask them to donate to local shelter so you know they are willing to spend money on the dogs (unfortunately many people treat something they get for free like it is worthless).

Don't be afraid to say no! Don't be afraid to ask to check out peoples homes or other pets or whatever you feel is necessary! You know what is best for these dogs and have significant time to work this out... be picky!!

I personnaly would try to avoid shelters; they are sometimes really ignorant about Bully breeds. Hug-A-Bull (http://hugabull.com/ ) is a local (to me) Bully rescue i would check out thier links to try find a bully specific rescue close to you that will let you advertise your dogs. They also have links for pit bull online communitys which may be an excellent place to meet people who could be interested and already be educated on pit's.

Do NOT bring them to a shelter. If you follow any of my posts you will know that I am always saying there is no real overpopulation. However you have the one thing that shelters are finding to often and can't seem to find homes for. You may have to give them away without a fee, or a very small one. BUT if you do that yourselves than you will know where they are and who they went to and feel comfortable with whom you chose.

If I were you I would start soon because more people look for dogs during the spring than any other time. It is harder to place or sell dogs in winter, and after school starts in fall than it is in the spring.

I would take some great pictures and put them on the web and then go to craigslist and post free ads in your area. Be choosy in who you select but leave yourself some time to get this done. It is much easier to place Small dogs, large dog particularly pits can be harder to place and are among the first chosen to be Put to Sleep at shelters,

I wouldn't take them to a shelter, even a no kill one. Most have apalling living conditions for the animals. Also, Pit bulls or pit bull mixes are usually the last ones to get adopted at shelters and many never do get adopted because of a Pit Bulls aggressive
reputation. In fact, in many areas, it is against the law to own a Pit Bull or a Pitt Bull Mix. (I would check out the area you are moving to. call animal control in the city or town you are going to
and ask if it is illegal to own Pit Bulls there, or if you need a special permit, etc.)
If it is not illegal to own one there, I would suggest asking a friend to dog sit for a couple of months until you have your own place for them. Offer to pay them a small amount to do it.
If the friend thing is a no go, try calling a kennel near where you will be moving and board the dogs there until you get your own place.
Many kennels have payment plans, if you ask for one.
If you absolutely must give them up, try talking to your vet.
Sometimes they can help you arrange an adoption.

Why not try contacting some rescues to see if they can do temporary foster care of the dogs until you get yourselves established? It would be very difficult to find a place to take these 2 larger breeds together especially if they are a bonded pair. It is tough enough just finding a home for one on its own, as there are thousands of dogs in that size range waiting months and years for a home

Why don't you try to find a job there now, before you leave? That way, you can possibly find a place before you go and bring the dogs with you. Or you may be able to find a place in town where they can be kenneled until you can bring them. Pits are really hard to find homes for and a lot of shelters will not accept them or put them to sleep immediately.

Try posting ads at the local shelter, also try petfinder.com If you are giving these animals away, the worst thing to do is actually advertise them for free especially since these are pits. While they may be your loving dogs, someone might want them for other reasons and if they are free that is all the more reason to get them. You could also check if their are any rescues in your area as they can find good homes that are made to meet certain standards

A possible option, if you want to keep the dogs in the long-run:

Contact a rescue group or boarding kennel and let them know your situation. See if they will foster your dogs for you until you have a place of your own where you can have the dogs, and then you will get the dogs back. If it's a temporary situation, there may be groups willing to do this. I would recommend making a hearty donation to the rescue group if they are able to help you.

Good luck... =(

Go to Petfinder. There, you will find a list of your local shelters and rescue groups (once you type in your info.). You can call them and let them know of your situation.

Also, if you want to find homes for them yourselves, petfinder has a classified section where you can place an ad for FREE describing your dogs and seek a new owner(s). The ads are organized by states, so someone in your area looking for dogs like yours will hopefully see your ad.

75 lbs is not exactly medium LOL

It will be hard to find homes for them..there are so many unwanted dogs as it is that people cannot find homes for. You can try a rescue group.

Another idea is one of you go to the friends house and look for a job and get a place and have the other person join you later with the dogs.

Please don't just give these dogs away for free to someone you don't know. With it being a Pit you wouldn't want some of those ignorant people that use these dogs to fight to use your dogs as bait or to train their dogs to fight at the cost of your beloved pets lives. Charge some sort of fee. Good luck. I hope you do find them both a very loving home.
