or what are my options? Mapquest says that it should take around 35 minutes my car... so what might that ride cost approximately if I take a TAXI? I live in LA, so mass transit isn't really our thing... but I'm really looking forward to it!

LizzyTish is right - a taxi is a $45 flat fare (plus tolls and tips) from JFK to ANYWHERE in Manhattan.

You can, if you wish, take the subway. There is an AirTrain station at JFK, which will take you to the subway station. Look at a subway map, and find out which line is closest to where you want to go.

BEST BET for a novice traveler on a budget. Take the bus to the Port Authority building (about $12), then take the subway from there. It is a much shorter, safer ride. Or you can take a cab from there for $10 or $12.

Very easy - you won't have any trouble.

This is a great neighborhood - safe - great architecture, interesting restaurants, close to buses and subways, Central Park, Riverside Park, museums. I love the sidewalk book peddlers near Zabars. Try Pampa, an inexpensive Argentine steakhouse on Amsterdam and 94th (good looking waiters - large outdoor garden). Be sure to see Lincoln Center at night - the lights reflecting on the fountain - beautiful. Eat at Gray's Papaya - corner of 72nd and Broadway - two delicious hotdogs and a fresh tropical juice for $2.99 - no seating - you eat standing up at a counter looking out onto Broadway. Less than 10 minute subway ride from Times Square - the bus goes there too - takes a little longer, but it's a much more interesting ride. Easy ride to Greenwich Village - be sure to go to both the East and West Village. Wear your most comfortable shoes and have a great time.

Don't bother with the subway if you're not from NY. Taxi's have fixed rates from the airports to anywhere in Manhattan. I think it's $45 from JFK.

It's super easy to get a taxi from the airport. Just pick up your checked bags, walk outside, and there will be a taxi queue, day or night. Sometimes you have to wait for taxis on the line, so bring a warm jacket. You can also call a car service like AllState 212.333.3333, which is only slightly more expensive. Plan for $60 with toll and tip. (I've left a link of car services. I advise not to use Carmel, they once left us stranded at 4am, and our concierge said he'd seen that often from them. Just my experience.)

You could take the subway, but I wouldn't at that time of night, especially. It would take a good hour and a half. and be a big pain. A cab will cost about $60 with tip.

LOL. You are looking forward to NYC mass transit? You are going to have a very diffent opinion of it when all is said and done. Anyway, subway runs 24 hours so you should be good to go.
