What materials would be the least troublesome to maintain in a bathroom used by messy boys?

I would recommend using a paint with a semi-gloss finish on a textured wall. Wall paper can come loose in a bathroom. And if you paint, the semi-gloss will hold up better and you shouldn't notice touch-ups if you ever have to touch up the paint. For the floors I'd recommend linoleum. They are easy to wipe clean if they get mud on the floor or get sick and don't make it all the way to the toilet before puking. Tile could work, but it's harder to clean out the grout lines since it isn't as smooth or a continuouse surface.

For a bathroom sink, I'd recommend corian. It looks like marble and holds up for about 30 years. It is very easy to clean. I have that for my bathroom sinks, they look like white marble.

It is also good to use for bathroom showers. My parents used that for their shower and it is so easy to keep clean. Just make sure it gets caulked with antimicrobial caulking to prevent mold.

For a bath tub, I recommend a steel tub. They hold up longer and don't have the risk of getting stained as easily. Plastic is porous and if some dye happend to get on it, it might soak right into the plastic.

Never use carpet in a bathroom. Messy boys will get water all over the floor and possibly miss the toilet from time to time, so definitely not good to get carpet.

And if you use rugs try not to us rugs on a linoleum floor that have rubber matting on the bottom. If water gets trapped between the rubber mat and the linoleum for too long it can discolor the linoleum.

The reason why I said a corian sink versus formica is sometimes boys can get picking at the seams of formican and pull the formica apart. Plus, you don't have to work about the sink leaking around the rim where the bowl meets the formica. The top or bowl is all one piece, so no chance of leaking.

Corian and tile for sure. Not a plastic tub. Boys can be roudy and the plastic or acrylic tubs don't last as long. If you can spring for it go solid and you will thank yourself in the end. All of the materials listed above can be bleached and are tough!!!

Also, Bear makes this new 'Kids" paint that is scrubbable. Go for that. Mud and "Anything Else' will wipe away. I know!!!

Washable rugs.

As far as cleaning. About once a month I take the shoqwer curtain and tub mat and wash them in my washing machine with bleach. Kills everything and comes out sparkling. Just wash and Re-hang to dry!!

I have to agree with the ceramic tile suggestion. But would add, a formica or solid surface counter top for the vanity. If there is a bathtub, I would recommend a single unit fiberglass walled enclosure with shower doors instead of a curtain arrangement.

I would just plasticize the whole room... everywhere... The best thing to do in all seriousness is to have THEM clean it. YOU stand there like a warden and FORCE them to clean it while you watch. NOBODY leaves 'til it meets your standards. If they won't do it, dont let them use it... go to the gas station to pee... go to McDonalds for the rest... go somewhere else and make your mess... they'll learn, takes time and a tough Mom...lol.. go for it!
