It fails the test of reasonable ethics. There is no victim if someone doesn't believe in God. It can only cause harm to God if God has an ego more fragile than a a crystal pony, and that would be an attribute of God, not the non-believer.
If God existed and wanted people to "believe in him," it would have been a simple matter to make his existence undeniable. But instead, the universe makes MORE sense in the absence of a creator, and does so to a greater and greater extent with the advance of science.
Reasonable ethics would dictate that any punishment fit the crime, and with no victim, no punishment at all is called for.

together as i'm an atheist, if the Christian God existed, i come across it very stressful to have self assurance that he would provide eternal torture for a finite crime. human beings are inherently fallible, so except he's a sadist, i don't think of that eternal torture exists. interior the recent testomony, Jesus teaches loving and forgiving anybody; does not God do the comparable to us? God, by using definition, is suited. a suited being has countless forgiveness, and does not be that vengeful against absolutely everyone - quite virtuous non-believers.

Good question, MeatBot. Whether it is God's "job" or not is subject to discussion, but it is definitely not our place to do it simply because God said to love our neighbor. To ignore God's explicit commands and then base your actions on what you think God may ultimately want to do himself would be foolish indeed.
Edit to Chippy1080: Sorry, but you ought to think through your answers first. God clearly has rights and privileges (and corresponding responsibilities) that we do not - and I am thankful for that! As I and other have said, ignoring God's explicit commands in order to do what you think God might do eventually anyway is very foolish. Jesus said "if you love Me, obey my commands", not "if you love me, try and figure out what My Father will do at the end of time and do it yourself now."
Besides, just because person X is now an unbeliever does not mean that they always will be. I am an ex-atheist, ex-Buddhist who God sovereignly decided to save from my sins and self-delusions. That unbeliever - maybe even you! - may have a similar fate to mine, maybe far more glorious!

Everyone has two choices. To choose Jesus and live for Him and receive the eternal reward of Heaven. Or to not choose Jesus and not be forced to live forever with God and to to the only other place. Hell.
Hell is the place prepared for Satan, his angels and those who choose not to have Jesus for their Lord and Savior. You get to choose!
P.S.
God made his existence undeniable when He came to the earth in the flesh, as His only begotten Son, Jesus. He was denied then too

Do you want to disobey a direct order from God?
Romans 12:19
Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

why is it bad, god sends non-believers to be tortured, and since god cannot do bad, obviously it is a good thing.
