I have a 1992 Volvo 940 with 260K miles. I am seeing evidence of oil in the coolant - it looks like light brown gooey slime floating on top of the coolant in the reservoir - but I am not seeing any evidence of coolant in the oil. Other that that, the car runs normally, no problems. Any ideas ? Is the head gasket on its way out ?

Are there any leaks? It may just be a gasket leaking. First thing is start with the least expensive option get a coolant flush and fill and an oil change. Monitor the fluids and if the happens again get a coolant pressure test done.

Check for a head gasket through your mechanic but there is a common problem with volvos that the transmission oil cooler in the radiator can corrode and cause the trans oil to leak into the radiator also check that the trans fluid hasnt turned a milky color and that the trans hasnt started to slip

hope this helps pls let me know

Head gasket id say mate!a compression test or sniff test should tell you that, compression should be 9 bar approx, oil in with the coolant, off with the head and replace the gasket, only use the same head bolts if they don't look stretched in the center,, if in doubt replace, may as well replace the timing belt while its off if its due, coolant system flush, and expansion tank clean out,new coolant, should do the job!! good luck!!!!!

your oil cooler is bad if no coolant in the oil, but oil in the coolant, oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure thats why the mix is only in the coolant if a bad oil cooler

You should also see a few tiny bubbles on your dip stick. Best check is a compression test
