Sake is an alcoholic brewed beverage of Japanese origin. While it's physical properties are more wine-like, it is actually more closely related to beer.
INGREDIENTS:
The Rice
There are at least nine types of special rice used to make sake. Growing sake rice is hard and backbreaking work, and inefficient as well from a mass-production standpoint.
The Water
Great sake typically comes from small brewers who use special water from nearby mountain streams or hidden underground aquifers.
The Koji
The magical koji mold is used in sake brewing to break down the starch molecules into sugar molecules that can be used as food by the yeast cells.
The Yeast
The type of yeast used in the brewing process significantly impacts the flavor and fragrance of the resulting sake.
The sources for these ingredients greatly effects the flavor of sake, just as do the staple ingredients of beer or wine making.
Cheers :-)

Sake is a fermented rice drink, typically called "rice wine". It is a Japanese drink (not Chinese) and is made from rice, water and other ingredients to make it ferment. You have probably heard stories of Sake containing venom of a snake, or formaldehyde, whih isn't true.

Sake is a beverage fermented from rice, which is a grain. This would make it more of a beer than a wine. Yet, sake is not carbonated, and flavor-wise is closer to wine than beer, although it is indeed uniquely different from wine. Sake is not a distilled beverage, and is not even remotely related to gin, vodka or other spirits.
Sake is generally between 15% and 17% alcohol.

Sake translated into English means "alcoholic beverage" It is known in Japan as either nihonshu (Japanese alcohol) or sake.
It is known as rice wine since it is made from rice but it is not a technically a wine.
Sake is not necessarily expensive. You should be able to buy a nice bottle of Sake for less then $15.00.
Here is a source for you.

All I know is that Sake is an alcoholic beverage that the Chinese make out of rice, presumably to some very ancient formula since it has been a traditional drink of the Chinese for centuries. I tried it once and can only comment that it is an acquired taste. I never attempted to acquire it. lol

It is a strong drink usually made by fermenting the starches in rice. It is more a beer than a wine even though it is usually called "rice wine."

Sake is not a "drink", it is an alcoholic beverage. It is brewed from rice, sort of in the same way beer is brewed.
