I learned it when I was about five. I didn't believe her because I could have sworn her name was "mom"

I learned my mom's real first name was "Inga" when I was 11. My mom hated her first name, so she went by her middle name, which was "Lisa."

When I found out that her real name was Inga, I completely understood why she didn't use it; I asked her why my grandma had named her that, and was told that it was a family name. (My grandparents were Swedish and came over here from Sweden when they were in their late twenties.)

My mom said that she hated her first name; her schoolmates teased her and called her "Ingie" and made it sound like "Inky". Her last name was Sandstrom and the other kids made that into "Sandstorm." So there you are: "Inky Sandstorm." Boy are kids mean little brutes to each other.

Since I have memory, I have know her name. We were raised living close to the extended family where everybody else (lots of people!) called her by her name, while me and my sister called her mom. What I do remember is that once one of my cousins called her mom too, and I got very upset.

On the other hand, my oldest son is 3-1/2, and even when he listen to everybody else (not many people though) call me by my name, he always introduces me as mom (even when his preschool teacher asked him my name) and when I tell him that is not my name, he refuses to accept it, because according to him, I am "mom".

I can't remember, myself. My mom said I liked calling her by her first name when I realized that other people were calling her Evelyn. She said at first she would be irritated by it and correct me. Then she realized I was just trying to get her attention so she stopped correcting me and I stopped calling her by her first name. Funny how kids are. Now, when my daughters(5 and 14) call me by my first name just to get a rise out of me, I give them extra love, of course!! :)

I think I was about 4. I remember being completely confused. I just thought that I was going to be a little girl forever, and she would be my mommy forever. Then she told me that one day I might be a mommy too, and that completely baffled me but now it's happening! I'm 23 weeks pregnant!

Haha, I was the same way :) I was maybe 4 when I found out, but was very confused for several years afterwards because she goes by her middle name, so I wasn't sure WHAT her name was. :)

Huh? When I was old enough to hear someone call her by her name. My reaction? She's mom to me and Jean to someone else. Did everybody always call her mom in front of you?
