Sounds like a darn good case of the Chicken Pox to me!! You say you're 45----FYI the older you are when you have the Chicken Pox...the worse the case will be. Sounds like this is what's happening with you. It's possible to have the lesions in your throat too.(and nose and ears) You feel downright miserable with them.

Its possible that you have strep throat that morphed into scarlet fever. The main diagnostic symptom of scarlet fever is a sandpaper texture to the rash. Its not a good idea to let scarlet fever go untreated because it can morph again into rheumatic fever, which causes permanent problems.

If the rash does not have a sandpaper texture, it is not scarlet fever, and more likely caused by some type of virus. With viral rashes, antiviral medications help a little, but the usual treatment is just to take an antihistamine (like Claritin) or use Calamine lotion to relieve the itching.

If you are not sure about the scarlet fever, this is one time when its probably worth shelling out the money for a doctor visit.
