I am getting some recipes together to make a cookbook in honor of my Grandmother and My mom. I send emails to my family telling them that if they don't want to participate then they have to by the cookbook from me, is this is right? Its going to cost me about $300.00 for 20 books. Any ideas of how I could do it for cheaper or how to get the family more involve on this project? I want to be fair with everybody. I also want to have ready for Mother's Day. Thank you this is my first time doing this kind of project and if its succesful it will be more to come!

I made a cookbook for a group that I worked with once. I printed each recipe on 1/2 a page along with a picture of the donor and a little teensy bio. Then we had them printed on nice weighted paper with a plastic coated cover with the spiral bindings. I can't remember what that cost, but surely it's not $300. That's probably why folks aren't participating. Instead of insisting they pay, why don't you simply ask for donations for her book and if they would like a book, it would cost $xx amount? That way, if they want one, they can commit to it rather than being "forced" to participate.

Have you looked into doing it yourself for less? The first answer had one book style that you can often get done at any copy shop like Kinko's, Office Max or Staples. The books bound this way actually look pretty good and it seems like it would be an ideal format for a cookbook because it's easy to fold the book at the page you want.

You can also make it a bit easier if you have Microsoft Word. Word has a page layout called "book fold". How it works is when you're entering the text you see the pages in order, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on. But when it prints out, say an 8 page book, you get page 1 and page 8 on one side of a piece of paper. Page 2 and page 7 go on the other side of that paper. Page 3 and page 6 print on one side of the next sheet. Page 4 and page 5 go on the reverse side of the second sheet. You stack the 2 sheets and fold them in half like a book. Then you can print out a cover on heavier card stock, fold that around the pages and staple them in the center.

As long as you use multiples of 4 pages you're set. It can take some work figuring out how to feed the papers into the printer to get everything printed just right but once you're used to it you can print everything from short stories to club phone directories.

Send each family member a few recipe cards with a return addressed evelope and with a stamp. Ask them for a few pictures that you can add to the cookbook to make it more personal. They will like that and will want to buy one just to see themselves in print.
Telling them like you did was in fun I am sure, but they take offense to it. This way is including them in the project. I collect cookbooks and would love to see the finished product. Have fun and good luck.

If you go to Ezekiel Ch 4, you'll find a recipe for making bread with sh!t. and it was important enough that god even had to come and talk about it (sh!t-bread)

see how silly the book is?
