There has been a dog around our yard latley and my 2 year old male dog has been acting very weird. He is barking uncontrolably when he is outside on the chain, shivering when he is indoors laying down and even just acting different. he has had all of his shots and has always acted the same...now that there is another dog in his territory he is different. PS- The dog is a stray and we don't know if its male or female. Any suggestions on why my dog is acting this way?

If the other dog is marking your yard then your dog may be showing signs of submissiveness to the stray. If the other dog is a female in heat he may be showing signs of excitement. If the other dog is around a lot try to get a pic and see if anyone is missing the dog. The local vet may have a poster up of someone looking for it. Your dog should be fine as long as he has all his shots and they don't start a dog fight.

Good luck! :)

For whatever reason, it is the stray who seems to have instigated this new behaviour in your dog, you are right about that.

He may be protecting his territory, he may be infected, he may not be thoroughly socialized, there could be any number of reasons for his behaviour.

The best solution is to have the stray removed from your property and see if your dog returns to normal after a few days. If he doesn't then consult his vet.

If you like the stray or believe your dog likes the stray, let the animal control people know that you will be interested in adopting this stray once it has been completely checked out by them.

If you can handle another dog, your dog may just enjoy the company.

Although you've already heard this...your dog is probably in LOVE! My male dog reacts the same way when the neighbor girls (dogs) are in heat. Doesn't happen often, but they have 3 girl dogs and when one is in heat my male black lab goes nuts...(no pun intended)...

The first time it happened he scarred me - the noises that came out of his mouth were like I have never heard before. Not a bark, not a growl, not a whine - but all rolled into one strange guttural noise. He just sat on the deck and starred at the house next door – even if the girl was inside, he couldn’t stand not being within possible sight of her. And when she did come out – the sounds and shaking and pawing and funny faces started up again. When the girl dog was finished, my dog went back to “normal”. It continues to happen when they go in heat – just not as bad, or at least not as scary for me. I really think it scared my dog the first time too – but now he knows what is going on so he is not as vocal about it.
Definitely my guess on what is happening to your dog. Have fun and keep them apart – unless you want puppies.

Has your dog interacted with the stray at all? He could have gotten bit, and if it didnt transfer anything it may have just disturbed him a little. And yes, call the humane society or someone, like the other person said.

I dont think anything medically could be wrong with your dog. Its probably just the fact that another dog is, like you said, in his territory. Since he is a young dog, he might be threatened by the other.

The best answer Ive got for you is that your dog just wants to check out the stray. Call your local animal shelter or whomever takes care of strays and get the stray picked up. Your dog should be fine shortly! Best of luck!

ha,ha, oh dear, sounds like there's a lady about!! Maybe she's in season & this is why your dog is acting slightly strangely! We once had a male sheep dog chew his way through a wooden window frame on our house in an attempt to get to our female who was in season.

In a few weeks her season should finish & he'll return to normal, but make sure he doesn't escape or you could have some additions to your family.

Hope this helps.

call animal control about the other dog.

take yours to the vet if youre really worried. changes in animal behavior can indicate sickness.

dogs on leashes feel very open to attack by animals that are free. he could feel very threatened by the other dog.

It is probably a b i+ch. So i would say he (if given the chance) would jump the fence and have his wicked way with that poor defenceless bi+ch . If indeed there is such a thing. personally i have my doubts.
