The cat and dog foods have been the same for the past 4 years and this is recent. She only does it when we are away or sleeping. She hides when we return or waken becaue she knows it is wrong and we have punished her for it. But she still continues to do it. I assume its a nutrition problem going on. She is now not coming around because she continues to do this and she feel bad. We miss our dog, help!

I put my cat's food and water on top of the fridge. The cat enjoys the climb to get her food and the dog cannot get at it.

I have a 110 lb yellow lab, He's a big lab but so were his parents. And he is a walking stomach. He will eat anything. Your lab has gotten a taste for the cats food. Its not the most horrible thing in the world. Just put the cats food where the dog cant get at it and try giving the lab some canned wet food. Even dogs can get board with the same thing all the time I have three dogs and change thier chow every month or so. Some dogs don't like the change and wont eat a different dog food, some enjoy variety. Yours seems to like a little variety in her chow. By eating the cat chow she is communicating with you that she is board with the same old chow, so mix it up get canned and small bags of different chow. It could be fun to see what she likes best.

Change your dog's food. She's not interested in hers anymore so may want some variety. Buy Nutro Natural Choice large breed formula & mix it with her Alpo 1/2 & 1/2 for a week and then switch over to straight Nutro after that. I feed my dog a variety. I use one particular food all the time but add others (potato & duck or venison and rice) so she has a different flavour on top of the lamb & rice I feed her.

Keep the cat's food where the dog can't reach it. We don't allow our dog in the basement because that's where the cat's food & litter is. It's only natural that they want to eat it - it's a different taste (fishy) and dog's do like the taste of fish. I often give my dog a handful of the cat food as a treat & she wolf's it down.

Give her lots of affection for the next little while and she'll come around.

Cat food has more protein than dog food, due to different nutritional needs, so she probably just tried it and likes it now. Don't punish her unless you catch her doing it, because she's not connecting why you are punishing her. She just knows that when you come home she gets in trouble, which is why she is avoiding you. You may want to move the cat's food to some place your dog can't get it. We put our cat food on a dresser in the basement, so it is too high for our dogs to see (they also don't go in the basement much, so they don't get a chance to look for it).

Could be a thing of dominance and territory. With some animals when they do this they feel neglected; and since your dog isn't going to attack you or anything it could be hoping to eliminate the competetion. Try paying more attention to your dog. Feed it first in the morning and take it for a walk or let it out before you feed your cat.
If this doesn't work, try swtiching your dog's food to something that resembles the cat's food, maybe it's the texture or taste.

In friends homes that have both cats and dogs they put the cat food somewhere the dogs can not get it. Either up high or in an area that the dogs can not get to.

Put your kitties food in another room and put a gate up so the cats can still get to the food... My dog does the same thing so i put my kitties food in my bathroom and put a gate up... hahah he cant get to now!! The reason your doggy does this is because kitty food is SOO yummy to a doggy =) put a gate up and give your doggy some canned doggy food to let her know she is loved and wanted =) and never punish a doggy if you dont see her doing it... they will forget about what they did and not understand why you are punishing them =) I hope this works for you and your doggy!!!
