Hi.

I am taking Prozac for OCD.
I think it is starting to kick in.
I have used Zoloft and that made me gain weight. So I reduced my doses to 50mg from 175mg. So I am now taking just 50 mg. The weight gain has stopped. I have been taking Prozac, and do not seem to have gained anything yet. My appetite seems strange, at times gone and at times I eat. I play with my doses I am supposed to be at 40mg but have gone up to 60mg (OCD got bad), but I am planning to drop to 40mg and follow Docs orders. I do know what SSRI's are and how they workk, so I am not looking for explanations.
What I want to know - has anyone taken any other SSRI and gained weight, then gone onto Prozac, and lost? How long does it take before weight loss occurs? Also, could Zoloft 50mg be preventing weight loss, even though I am on Prozac and holding my weight constant.

I can pretty much deal anything but weight gain. Any experiences?

Thanks for the first answer - I do however know all the ins and outs of Prozac. I know whats its used for. I have read quite a lot of mixed reasearch on it.
Much is said that it causes weight loss, but a lsome people claim that it has caused weight gain. So I just want to know what people have to say. The evidence is way to mixed.

I lost 50 pounds on Prozac. . . gained it all back when I went off of it. Part of it was that it decreased my appetite and increased my energy level--but part of it was that it made me feel better, so I stopped emotionally eating.

Please don't mess around with the dosage without doctor's consent. I speak from experience; Prozac is not a drug you take "as needed." You find a level you're comfortable with and you stick with it, or your could seriously mess yourself up. If you feel you need a higher dose, your doctor may consent. I was up to 90 on Prozac--you need more for OCD than you do for depression, and not every doctor knows that.

First the person you should be asking is your shrink. That said I know it's hard to fit in a question in the like three minutes the typical shrink gives you! Still, if you are playing with your dose, please keep in mind it takes weeks for the full impact of one change in dose to happen. If you are raising the dose up and down you'll just end up with mood ups and downs and you wont be able to tell what dose change caused what.

Ask your doctor about Wellbutrin. It does cause weight loss if you are overweight and rather quickly in my experience. I'm not sure if it's a good OCD med though my experience is depression.

Prozac did not make me gain weight but I did not lose.

When my son was taken off a different med (famous for weight gain) it took about six months for him to lose the 50 lbs. and return to normal weight. He did not diet but the carb craving went away and he resumed normal eating patterns.

i actually started taking prozac a few years ago for depression related to anorexia (or the other way around). of course, at the time, my major concern was gaining weight from it, but it has yet ot happen. since i have gotten a lot better i have clearly gained weight, but not from the prozac (i take 40mg)

you should be all set!

Prozac causes weight gain!

What Prozac does is it slows your metabolism, making you hungrier.

I am 19 and I took Prozac for 10 years. The reason was not anorexia or bulimia related. As soon as I dropped it I lost 40 pounds in 6 months.

If you take Prozac and you go to fill your prescription, as soon as you get the bottle it comes with a paper stapled onto it with info about the medicine and side effects. One of the side effects is weight gain. Obviously since everyone is different this would not apply to everyone, and there are plenty of people who have done amazingly well on Prozac. The only thing you can do is try it for yourself, however, you cannot fully tell what your reaction is until you've been taking them for months.

Prozac suppresses your appetite a little. It is also used for bulleamia to stop the cravings for food. Zoloft does make you put on weight, there are no two ways about it.

I think the depression was making you gain weight. Prozac definitely doesn't make you gain weight. You just keep your head up and keep a daily schedule and you will be fine.
