Leo, my sweet kitty, came down with a cute overloadever a couple of days ago...I was worried he wasn't drinking enough because his fur started to look strange, etc... Anyway, I took him to the vet yesterday, who confirmed that Leo was dehydrated... he also had a mild respiratory infection with almost none of the symptoms showing. Anyway, they injected him with fluids and something to take down the fever and he was GREAT after that. Now I know the fever is back, and I was told to expect that, but I'm worried he's not drinking enough again. I tried putting extra water in his food but he only wants so much of it. Is there any trick anyone knows to encourage my cat to get more fluids?

Um.. I don't know why 'cute overloader' came up, what I typed was 'mild respiratory infection'.

Will he still lick your fingers? Wet your fingers and put them against his mouth. Most animals will lick your fingers hoping you have something else like food on them.

If he doesn't seem interested in that at all...

Try getting an eye dropper and putting water in that. Then putting the tip in the cat's mouth and squeezing the top to put the water into his mouth. He'll have no choice but to swallow.

You could try force-feeding her some fluids. Have you ever forced her to take liquid medication?
Use a syringe (your vet should be more than happy to supply you with one if you ask) and fill it with water. You may need the help of another person to hold your cat. Hold your cat's head back and poke the end of the syringe in the side of her mouth in the gap where there are no teeth to get in the way and squirt the water inside.

The eye dropper works, I've done that before. You don't even have to get the eye dropper in her mouth. If you just squirt a little on her mouth she will naturally lap it up. If you keep a small cup of water there too she may drink a bit on her own once you have gotten her to drink a little with the eye dropper

Try an eye dropper or medicine dropper and fill with water... i guess you'll have to force water in him... that was how i got a dog to give us a urine sample from a dog that didnt want to drink water =) sit by your kitty and put the eye dropper of water in his cheek and squirt =) Good luck!! and i hope your kitty gets better soon!!

Awww my cat who got run over was called Leo, well anyway I agree, try bottled water instead of tap water because cats can smell the chemicals in tap water that we cannot, so if your cat is reluctant to drink already it might be harder to make him drink tap water. Good luck, hope Leo is ok!

Use a droper and make sure you to place it on the side of the mouth! if you do it to the side it will be easier than the front.
