It's that uhh, borderline personality kind of lovingness.

"I slashed your tires because I love you so much and I don't want you to leave!"

"Aaaahhh, isn't that sweet!?"

"Yeah, but before I forgive you, you'll need to kill my son. Throw in some grotesque torture too."

God created everything and called it good. There is much beauty and wonder in the universe, God providentially cares for all creatures, and knows when and where a baby deer is born and where the birds nest.
Water is good when we thirst and there are many foods that just taste good. The sunrise and settings are daily works of art that express his wonder and creativity. God created man and finalized it all with the creation of woman. Wow!
God wanted a creature that could respond to his wonder and will and gave humans dignity to choose. The problem is that humans defied God and crossed a parameter of grave consequences that tainted humans and nature. Gods solution to this was grace and mercy. That would be not getting what we do deserve and getting what we don't deserve. First in the Old Testament a solution to addressing the character and person of God and our neighbor was spelled out in the commandments. Secondly, the solution came in his own Son Jesus, fully human and fully God, who atoned for the flaws of mankind to wash them clean of the guilt of all their moral wrongs and make them new creations by faith.
The greatest wonder is that He cares about you and me personally. Often we can feel small and insignificant and tired of the menotinous patterns of life and Jesus says, "Whosoever will come to me I will give them life and life more abundantly." Then this faith thing starts to grow and soon we trust him and believe that life is for us because God does love us that he sent his son to redeem us a fallen people and He makes it personal.

We all have rebelled against the God who loves us by slandering Him and wronging and hurting other people whom He also loves. By our own choice we have separated ourselves from Him.

But "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who so ever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life."

If you want to see the very definition of God's love, read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

God is a parent. You are loving and kind to your kids aren't you? You also discipline your kids don't you? Imagine being the parent of millions.

Ok, those first two guys answers made NO SENSE. lots of parents "Create" children, and don't love them and are cruel to them. It's just false advertising.

on the days when I think I might believe, I think about god maybe being very disengaged with the world these days...maybe he's busy watching soaps.

He isn't. The God described in the bible is full of hate, anger and contempt. According to the bible he put more people to death than Hitler. But most Christian's choose to ignore the hateful comments, or else are too ignorant to realize they are in there.
