1. Start with cardio only. If you haven't worked out before, a nice brisk walk will suffice nicely. You should feel challenged but not totally out of breath.
2. Once you start to see results you will be encouraged. Move on to sit ups and or push ups.
3. Hopefully you are losing weight and feeling better. Progress slowly onto a weight regimen.
4. The key with a weight regimen is to quickly see results. There is no quicker way than by doing push ups. Progress from there onto a more complete weight training regimen.
Good luck. Remember the key is: "Success breeds success." If you see results you will be less likely to lose focus.

Set a goal for your workouts. Keep track of your performance such as a log of your times or even a wall chart that you fill in every day when you workout. Work out with someone else so you can both help motivate each other. Find an activity that you like.

find an exercise thats fun, not just good for you and youll be more likely to do it and stick to it.

i personally hate running, and most basic exercises, but anything that keeps you moving will work

fun "non-exercise" things i do: ddr (its kinda lame, but relly fun, and a great way to keep you moving)
skiing (not as strenuous as a 5 mile run, but still good)
take a self defence or karate class, theyre really fun with friends, and its handy knowledge to have
playground: swinging counts as cardio!
clubbing: if you hold back on the alcohol, dancing is a great way to burn calories

basically, any fun activity that makes you get up and move will work.

If you can, find someone to work out with who either (a) looks like you want to look (your goal weight, muscle mass etc) or (b) has similar goals to yours. Write your workout times on the calendar, just like an important appointment, so that you don't schedule anything else. You are important enough to rank space on your calendar!!

I have a friend that I meet up with at the gym, we have been doing this for over a year now. It's a mental thing I think that I can't let her down and not show. It also makes it more enjoyable when you have someone there.

Buy clothes that will only fit if you stay in shape. Throw away all your other clothes, or put them in storage at least.
