you might want to suggest looking into being a surgical tech. if they aren't squeamish at the site of blood, this field offers so much. if you watch the TV shows the tech is the one that stand next to the surgeon and hands him/her there instruments and what ever else they'll need. there's no greater reward than knowing that you you helped to save someones life or bring a new one into this world. check into schools that will have classroom and clinical training. the best part is, if you are training with a doctor that loves to teach, you might be as lucky as i was when i trained and actually hold a beating heart in your hands during surgery. check into it they won't be sorry!

A lot depends on their interested, their education, their tolerance for dealing with people, and their desire to advance.

The general fields include: physician, physician assistant, nurse, nurse assistant, dietician, physical/occupational therapy, radiology tech, medical assistant, unit clerk, billing specialist, transcriptionist, medical records clerk, surgical tech, respiratory therapist, social worker, paramedic/EMT.

All have positives and negatives.

Physician: the most training, the most responsibility, the best pay.

Physician Assistant: the "right hand of a physician", lots of schooling, lots of responsibility, decent pay.

Nurse: lots of schooling, close patient contact, less decision making, decent pay, good advancement opportunities (med/surg, outpt, nurse anesthetist, critical care, management)

Nurse Assistant/Medical Assistant: close patient contact, significantly less training, little decision making, good entry point to determine if you want to learn more

Dietician/respiratory therapist: some schooling, lots of independence, work all over the hospital, decent pay

Physical/Occupational Therapy/Respiratory Therapist: moderate training, lots of independence, work all over the hospital, good pay, very hands on with patients.

Radiology Tech: moderate schooling, some independence, potential to work all over the hospital, decent pay.

Unit Clerk, Billing Specialist, Transcriptionist, Medical records clerk:
some schooling, little independence, fair pay, usually only work in one specific area of the hospital.

Social Worker: some schooling, decent pay, usually work with one particular patient type.

Paramedic/EMT: some to moderate schooling, lots of independence, can be exciting, higher potential for injury, decent pay.

Surgical Tech: moderate schooling, exciting field, decent pay, "put your helmet on" - you'll deal with surgeons in a high stress environment. :-)
