Hi, has anybody ever applied or received any grant from government for music? Or for performing art? We are musicians and trying to start recording our music and perform it. Please let me know if anybody has any information.
Thanks

It will not be easy - it depends on your type of music and whether they can contribute to "humanities" (pop is definitely out)

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. Once you find a grant where you can qualify, apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) and their opening blurb says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Foundation Center is the leading name in the field of philantrophy.

Grants For Musicians

The NEA does occasionally give grants for composers. Almost always goes to some young firebrand just out of the conservatory. Usually goes to a wealthy young firebrand, but that's the way most government grants are set up... they mostly go to people with influence who don't really need the help at all.

The MacArthur foundation also gives grants, but these are based on achievement, so it's a fair certainty that the receiver has already accomplished quite a bit.

If you're concerned with recording your music primarily, I'd guess you're doing something akin to pop music, and sorry, there are no grants for that. My advice is: get up to date on digital recording.
Learn Pro Tools, scare up enough bread for some good mikes and a decent computer set-up, and record yourselves. It's worth taking the time to do this and in the end it saves you mucho in your work.

Good luck. The music business bites the bisquit. Thought you should know.
