Don't look at it as what you're going to get out of it, look at it as what you're going to put into it.

Believe it or not volunteering for any good organization helps when it comes to applying to good colleges. They actually look for people that are willing to give a part of themselves to helping others
What exactly are you volunteering for? You might learn something really great from this experience that you can use to better yourself.
You might learn that no matter how ruff your life might seem at the moment you are living a good life compared to others.
You might learn to never take what you have for granite because it can all be gone in a flash.
You might learn just how big of a heart you really have.
You didn't really say what you will be doing. There are so many ways to volunteer so it is hard to give you a straight answer. The answers I gave come from my own experience

Volunteering is always great. I think the greatest thing i have ever learned from volunteering is....
well, the best way to put it, is i guess to look outside of myself. When i volunteer, i am reminded of what goes on out there that i am not involved in or don't know about. It reminds me wake up in the morning and think about the fact that the kid 2 apartments down may have just lost his parents. or a perfect dog just got dumped at an animal shelter for no reason. It really makes me want to do good and help out the world.

hard to say without knowing what type of volunteering you are doing.......but most volunteer work helps others in some way.......helping illiterate people learn to read for example.......not only do you get the benefit of passing on your knowledge to improve someone else's life...you gain the knowledge that it's never too late to learn........you gain the respect of those you are helping and you will learn things about yourself that you may not have known before.......maybe the program you are in is something that will really interest you and in turn motivate you to choose that path for your life's work...........and also you get the satisfaction of knowing that because you did something as simple as giving of your time...........someone else can hold their head high and can feel better about themselves....
enjoy the time this summer

I love volunteering! It is the most rewarding experience to be able to help other people in even the seemingly smallest of ways while not receiving any remuneration/pay. It should be such a great learning experience for you as well as to help increase one's character and seeing others who are less fortunate than ourselves.
And I would certainly agree that the volunteer project can only enhance your resume and college applications, showing benevolence and compassion for others as well as motivation and leadership.

You'll feel more independant and more like an adult. You'll have a new perspective on the world and hopefully start thinking on a global scale rather than from a personal perspective (as teenagers do). If it is a good experience I guarantee you will come back and people will say wow! what happened to you!?
