I have a HP DVD840-x external drive and it was working perfectly before a Windows system restore . I have lost my installation disc and when I try to play a movie I get:
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.

Consequently, I am unable to play avi video, just the audio.

Are there any programs I can install that will take care of this FRUSTRATING problem?

When the built-in media player doesn't work, use VLC.

You can get it for free here: http://bit.ly/1v81RF4

It's my favourite media player and I highly recommend it over any other audio/video player.

VLC (video lan connect) is a great open source software to play any types of video files. VLC has a built in dvd decodere and works with many different video and audio formats including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac.

Create another restore point and try installing a codec pack. Like this one:

If that doesn't work, try installing a program that will install components to allow Windows Media Player to work. A program like PowerDVD or WinDVD.

If that doesn't work, the last resort is to use the best video player. It is called VLC and can be downloaded here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

VLC is lightweight and can play many formats without the need for codecs. It can also play dvd files from a copy on your computer.

Don't worry about it.
First:
go here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1101461&lang=en&

Follow the directions in installing the dvd rom drive.

If THAT doesn't work,
it could be the software you're running to play the dvd.

I suggest a couple of players:

http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html
(supports .avi)

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
(plays dvds)

Download those players,
test them out,
if THAT doesn't work,
call HP
