I'm getting my son baptised, but I was wondering if he can have 2 godmothers? My cousin and my best friend are vying for the position and i don't want to exclude either one because they both deserve it. Anybody know the protocol on this?

Godparents are people you trust to teach your faith to your children, encouraging them in their walk thru their childhood, support system when they need someone to talk to other than us as parents. We are not catholic but have Godparents for our kids.... who have encouraged them thru the years.

Godparents are NOT legal guardians unless you have it in writing and documented that if something happens to you as a parent, that they are to have custody of the child/ren.

It would be important to pick out Godparents who are likeminded in their beliefs as you are...

If you trust both of these people with bringing your child up in the ways of the Lord, then I would pick both... no church should be able to say you cannot have 2 Godmothers...

I've never heard of 2 godmothers (except the fairy type). Do you plan on having other children? I'd suggest naming your cousin. Best friends change and don't always follow through for the life of your child. If you and she have a fight, your son will no longer have an active godmother.

I am godmother to my sister's 2nd child and I considered it an honor. She named her best friend as godmother to the 1st. Guess which child is remembered more for birthdays and baptismal days and other holidays? The best friend lost interest after a couple of years. I've found myself filling in as "step-godmother" to my oldest nephew so his feelings aren't hurt.

This is a decision only the parents can make and it is not uncommon to have two sets of godparents. I think it is always good for a child to have more than one set if possible. Follow your heart and if you feel both deserve it - then both it should be.

In Baptism one do not need godmother or father, because the Bible not say so. Baptism is a personal affair, it is your believeing that matters.

In the Catholic Church two witnesses or "godparents" are required, but there is no requirement regarding the sex of the two individuals.
