Because people were finally able to think for themselves without being killed, so people learned and progressed a lot. Some of our greatest philosophers come out of this period, as well as artists. It must have been inspiring to be free from those chains.

To add to the other answers, here is an interesting fact. The creators of christianity decided to name "gods advesary" Lucifer. Lucifer translated literally mean Light Bearer, or Enlightened One.
Also, Lucifer in Greek was Eosphoros, carrying the same mythological meaning as Prometheus. Prometheus is the bringer of fire to humanity, who was imprisoned for doing so.
So, after Lucifer was banished from heaven, he brought knowledge to Adam and Eve according to the bible. According to Greek Mythology, Prometheus gave humanity fire, and was then imprisoned. is it me, or are there some striking similarities in these stories?

Because it is the period of human centered philosophy, without theology to back it up. Men is the center of the world and uses his reason to see clearly (light) thanks to science. Unfortunately from there to having no faith in reason men did not take long (see postmodernism, weak philosophy etc..).
