Metallic taste in mouth does not always relate to teeth. If you take a multivitamin and mineral mix, sometimes, you can get a metallic taste in mouth upon rising in morning. Also If I eat soy products, I wake up in the morning with a metallic taste in mouth. Here are all the reasons Medline cites common cold
* nasal infection, nasal polyps, sinusitis
* salivary gland infections
* influenza
* viral pharyngitis
* mouth dryness
* aging (the number of taste buds diminishes with age)
* heavy smoking (especially pipe smoking) which causes mouth dryness
* vitamin (vitamin B-12) or mineral (Zinc in diet) deficiency
* injury to the mouth, nose, or head
* gingivitis
* side effects of drugs such as antithyroid drugs, captopril, griseofulvin, lithium, penicillamine, procarbazine, rifampin, vinblastine, or vincristine
* Bell's palsy
* Sjogren's syndrome
* strep throat"

But before you drive yourself crazy, look for common link between the drugs and foods you take and their immediate aftertaste.

I have never seen this but they taught us in dental school that it could be a symptom of gum disease. Are you on any new medications? Biaxin (clarithromycin) and Flagyl (metronidazole). Those are some common medications that are in my Dental Drugs Manual that cause metallic taste in mouth. Hope this helps:)

I'm not sure but if you are taking any medications this may be one of the side effects.
