Onions cause a problem called hemolytic anemia (which is also what Tylenol does), or basically the destruction red blood cells. This becomes a problem depending on how much a dog eats, for a small dog, it wouldnt take much, larger dogs take more. Or a prolonged exposure, like a little bit every day for a couple weeks, could also cause it. By the way, many baby foods also contain onion, so you shouldnt feed those either.

I didn't know they couldn't. My dog eats Mince with small cuts of cooked onions in and he has never been ill or sick from this, I didn't know onions were poisonous 2 dogs i know that chocolate is though.

The dog cannot metabolize the chemical make up of onions and it will kill the dog. It is poisonous to dogs.

It will make them sick, 'gastrointenstinal toxin'. And if ingested in large amounts (body weight vs. amount ingested...chihuahuas wouldn't have to eat as many as a great dane to get sick), it can be fatal to the dog.
