Hi sweety pie~ Well for one thing they aren't 'dye's' anymore. They're called 'colors' these days. There are many OTC's especially formulated for gray or graying hair. You just have to read the labels. I've been a licensed cosmetologist for over 16 years and find that NO ONE hair color works best for covering gray, although there are many claims to it. I have been using L'Oreal hair color in my hair for over 15 years now and think they work the best but that is purely my opinion. Unfortunately those gray wirey hairs keep popping up no matter what you use. I myself like to mix and use my own colors. I suggest that everyone try it too. Box colors are not cost effective. They are down right expensive to use over time. I suggest that you mix your own color. These can be easily purchased at any Beauty Supply Store like Sally's. You just have to buy the color and peroxide separately and mix your own color. That way you can be really specific about the color you want to use because there are so many choices. Most hair colors nowadays are mixed 1:1. That is, one part color to one part peroxide. You can buy a color bottle and gloves for about $2. The color and peroxide will cost a bit more at first (around $10 for both) but the beauty of it is that a bottle of peroxide will last you for MANY colors. One bottle of color will give you two root applications OR one root to tip color. If you are coloring your hair about every 3 weeks please don't overlap color and only color the roots. Overlapping can weaken the hair and make it (more) brittle. One other thing I suggest is to add a small amount of deep conditioner to your color mixture before you color. Also leave the color on your hair for the entire length of the application. When you color your hair you open the cuticle of your hair. You want gray hair to absorb every bit of color it can while it's processing. And be sure to CLOSE the cuticle of your hair by conditoning AFTER you color. Hope these help!~

Do you mean the roots are gray after 2-3 weeks? If so then there is no colour on earth that can prevent that.
If you mean the colour is washing out after that time then you need to look at your shampoo and maybe change it for one that is designed for coloured hair and a conditioner too. Its probably that which is causing the fade.
Salon shampoos cost more in the initial outlay but if you work it out they save you money in the long run.

I used to really like Clairol Ultress but it seems they stopped making it... Pick any coloring that says 'Permanent' on the box. These are designed to last as long as your hair does... Remember that color resistant grey usually takes the full 45 minutes instead of the minimum 25 minutes too..

Go to health store and ask about natural dye for hair. Over here it costs $10.00 and lasts longer.
