Somehow, Christians have this idea that freedom of religion means they have a right to pass laws which give their religion supremacy over others. The ACLU fights this, then they scream discrimination because their religion isn't above anybody else's. Kind of mystifying. Freedom of religion means ALL religions, not just Christianity. If Hindus (for example) tried to do some of the things Christians want to do, then Christians would really be screaming discrimination.

Think about it: Prayers to Krishna in school, reading about Brahma cracking open an egg to produce the universe in the public schools.

They sure seemed to accept the ACLU's help, though, when the government tried to stop Jerry Falwell from doing something and the ACLU fought FOR Falwell.

I am a Christian and a member of the ACLU. I do not consider the two to be mutually exclusive. The purpose of the ACLU is to uphold the Bill of Rights, which are the first ten amendments to the US Constitution. This includes the second amendment, or the right to bear arms.

I think that some Christians do not like the ACLU because the ACLU has a history of fighting very hard for the first amendment, which includes, among other things, free speech and a separation of church and state. When the ACLU defended NAMBLA, it was NOT because they advocate or condone the sexual abuse of children. The ACLU opposed a court ruling that a NAMBLA member was responsible for a murder in which he took no part simply because he had written something. In that ruling, the lawsuit tried punishing someone for something he said, and since what he said may have been disgusting and immoral but not illegal, the court cannot punish him for it. Below are two statements by the ACLU about the two topics, taken from the ACLU faq page:

"Why did the ACLU defend NAMBLA?
In representing NAMBLA, the ACLU does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children. What we do advocate is robust freedom of speech. This lawsuit strikes at the heart of freedom of speech. The defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people find repulsive. For more information, please read the ACLU's press release. <>

What is the ACLU's position on gun control?
The national ACLU is neutral on the issue of gun control. We believe the Second Amendment does not confer an unlimited right upon individuals to own guns or other weapons, nor does it prohibit reasonable regulation of gun ownership, such as licensing and registration. For more information, please read our statement on gun control."

The ACLU is not funded in any part by tax dollars, it is funded by members like myself who contribute to the organization.

Many Christians believe that there should not be a separation of church and state and that Christian laws should be the foundation of our nation's laws. That is where some Christians disagree with the ACLU and the US Constitution. I believe that the separation of church and state is necessary and a good thing.

I'm not sure about all the Christians who oppose the ACLU, but certainly there are some who "think" that the ACLU is anti-Christian, and it doesn't seem to matter at all that that "thought" is provably false:

http://www.aclufightsforchristians.com/

My own opinion is that many Christians are simply told (by people with an agenda, many of whom are less than completely honest) that the ACLU is anti-Christian...and they never try to find out what the record says, they just accept it (probably because they prefer to believe that the efforts of people of other religions to gain the same rights and privileges as Christians is some sort of oppression of Christianity)

It's never a smooth and easy thing for any group of people (cultural, religious, political, ethnic) who have had special privileges to extend those to others. They "feel" that as oppression - it is NOT, in fact, but they "feel" that way.

Well I'm not sure if that is the reason or not. I am a member of the ACLU and I think that they are a great organization. The constitution says that we have freedom of religion, so therefore we must have freedom from religion as well. The ACLU is currently fighting against the patriot act.

IF the aclu fought the patriot act....they get a loud applause from me. On the other hand, the aclu acts like they want to dominate and control the world, via legislation and 'someone's sense of moraility, justice and fairness (rather than God's)...This makes it pernicious and scary.

I might add: look around you, Christians do NOT control nor dominate this world....the 'gods of this world' are in the driver's seat...(read, evil ones) and will be until God unseats their sorry butts from their arrogant and usurpious positions.

The Christians who do not like the ACLU appear to be those who go by hearsay rather than actually check and see it what they have been told about that organization.

The sad part in all of this is even after it has been shown where these Christians were wrong, the fail to admit it.

Yes. They conveniently forget the fact that the ACLU also defends the rights of Christians, and has done so frequently.

I just read that they supported the North American Man/Boy Love Association, which is a group that wants laws removed to allow men to have sex with young boys. What the hell? What is this world coming to when grown men want to have sex with young boys and for this to be allowed by the government? On top of that, the ACLU supports this. Damn them to hell. If any grown man tries to have sex with my young son (if I ever have one) well I am going to hell and jail, because I would cut off his **** and then shoot him.
