It tastes nicer if you do butter both sides. But really, since it's going to cook in its sauce, who'll know? It will be a pudding after all.

You could do if you really wanted to if you wanted to have a pudding that was richerin flavour. But whether you do both sides or just one side it is a really nice pudding

no, just one side. you can make bread and butter pudding with malt loaf or cake spread with butter.
