First of all, NEVER be so cheap that you are trying to get your credit score for free by having a dealer or a bank run it as if you are getting a loan. This counts as a hard pull on your credit (aka an inquiry) and drops your score an average of 2-5 points.
For "official" credit score, the best place is myfico.com
You can also get yoru free reports once a year from www.annualcreditreport.com and then pay a few bucks for each score.
Or you can do like I do-- I pay $14.99 a month for all 3 reports and scores, and they can be refreshed daily for updates. It's at www.truecredit.com

you can contact any of the 3 credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Transunion and get it from them. It will usually be about 10 bucks or so. You are entitled to a free report every year but it will not include your score.
One thing to keep in mind is that the score you get from them will be a consumer disclosure score and could be different then if say a mortgage company pulled your score. Different businesses have a different platform for scoring. Typically a mortgage company will pull a higher score.
I used to be a loan officer and learned alot from a credit info company that we worked with.
One other thing to keep in mind is that if you go to places and have them request it, it will show up as an inquiry and too many inquiries can impact your score.
