I know what you mean, when I pray I do call God father on occasions, but not every other word! I guess for some they say it as a reassurance for them self as much as they are trying to convince them self they believe that way. I think some people want to think he's more father-like than they feel and that's their way of doing it...of course some people just like repeating themselves!
Of course God IS our father when we accept him as that, but some people simply don't feel he is, and so say it repeatedly to feel as though it's true for them personally.
Am wondering why the thumbs down from someone...must not have understood what I was saying!

Actually it is a good thing . People need to keep in mind what God actually is. Your father. When people call Him Father it makes His day. Also just like any father worth his salt He loves to hear you say you love Him. If people start doing these little things maybe He will start making THEIR day. He certainly CAN.

It's a title. A sign of respect. Like when you title a letter. Dear Mr. so and so. That's all. Some take it to an extreme though I agree but people are lead to say what they will say and who is it really hurting?

Because God plays many roles including Father and King. When we pray, we try to appeal to our 'Father', who will be merciful, rather the our 'King' who rules with strict justice.

It's a sign of respect and of love and of relationship. Christians are supposed to have a good, loving, respectful relationship with God. It's like a mature 8 year old having a best friend that's 60 years old. We're so small, so young, so stupid, so immature compared to God that we have to address him with respect. And yet we love him for what he's done for us.
Don't think of it as annoying, just accept it as a different method of worship, everybody has their own style. (I personally don't do that, but I know a lot of friends/church leaders who do.)

I know what you mean. Either "Father" or "Lord" or "Jesus" is used after every 4th word, lol. I expect it from people who are new to the faith, but we need to grow in the Lord and that includes our prayer life as well. I sometimes catch myself in repetitive phrases and try to focus on talking to God rather than just mumbling. I found that when I truly believe God is listening, I tend not to mumble. But, when I'm tired and tend to believe that God is distant...I just talk to talk (i.e., mumble).

It is better (not by much) than "er" or "ahhhh" or "hmmm".
Basically, its because the prayer-er has not prepared his mind and has no theme.
He's winging it and saying "Father" provides precious seconds to compensate for his lack of preparation.

They only do it when they are praying to their heavenly Father. You don't pray to PEOPLE do you? It's a little different.
Why do people ridicule what they don't understand?
