Just because a person has faith in a higher presence does not make them stupid. Why would you believe if it weren't for God religious people would have no morals? What makes you think you have everything figured out? Some of the most hateful people on this site are atheist, but yet you think you are the ony ones with MORALS. I don't want to convert anyone, I don't care what you believe. Just don't assume everyone other than yourselves have no intelligence.

Ouch.

Most atheists don't say that people need God to have morals, that is usually Chrisitans say that. Christians say that people cannot love or have morals without God. That is why we get offended.

I have seen only two or three hateful atheists on this site. I have seen dozens of cruel Christians. I don't know how long you've been here child, but you are obviously not a regular to this section. (And if you think questioning your religion is hateful, it is not meant to be. It is only meant to make you think, not just blindly accept.)

Thank you for having enough respect to try not to convert us or tell us we're going to hell, or tell us how wrong we are. I wish more people on every side would have that kind of respect.

I will apologize fot this, though. It is a common flaw of aethists to assume Christians are less intelligent, just because so many intelligent scientists nowadays are atheists. There are some very smart Christians out there; going to a Catholic college, some of them are my friends.

Do you feel better now, after your rant?

It is not stupid to me to believe in a higher "presence" I do not believe in a loving caring god because I see no evidence to support that idea. I know that religious people base thier morality on those laws that are given them in the bible. Believers are very often baffled by the idea that anyone who does not believe in god can have good morality. It is like they need to be told how to live. They cannot think for themselves.
Intelligence can mean different things. ONe can be intelligent as far as knowing the things that can be taught and some are better at applying that knowledge than others. There are also people who have a higher level of learning that have absolutely no common sense.
I used to believe the things that are in the bible. That was when I went to church and only read the parts that were "covered" during the church service. I lifved a sheltered life and knew very little about the world. I grew up emotionally and mentally. I became aware of the sufferin of the innocent and the degree to which they have and continue to suffer. I also learned about science and archeology. All of these things combined do not equal a loving caring god. I do not see why others cannot see the same things that I see. I believe that there are many who do see but choose to deny what they have come to realize

I don't consider someone stupid that believes in a higher power. I don't believe that pure logic is all that's at work in coming to or keeping that belief though. That said, I don't think that's logic's used in the majority of cases, with most human endeavors.

We like to consider ourselves logical creatures, but I've seen precious little of it from any quarter. Logic's primary use seems to be in rationalizing choices already made.

>Why would you believe if it weren't for God religious people would have no morals?

This is a statement made by theists, constantly. Rather inane actually. Chimpanze troups have a moral set of behaviors - it's inherent in any social animal. That doesn't mean all the members follow it, just that it's part of our inherited behavior processes, to help ensure the propagation of the species.

I'm an atheist, btw.

Aren't you judgeing Atheists ? Why do I believe that religious people would have no morals without their God ? I don't. What makes me think that I have everything figured out ? I don't.
I also don't care what others believe, but I certainly don't like being bashed.
Some of you religious nuts seem to have the feeling that it's okay to run non-believers into the ground, but they should never dispute the bashing. May God bless your ah-soul

You want to talk about hateful? I'm a Jew and if you search for questions with the word Jew or Jewish in them. then you will really see hatred from the morally-righteous Christians and the morally-righteous Muslims. And I don't assume that people who believe in a "higher power" are stupid at all. I find that it's mostly Christians who believe that atheists or that lovely euphemism "non-believers", (which really means anyone who isn't Christian) have no morals...they don't see how anyone can be moral without God. Good thing you don't want to convert anyone; you are really bad at it.

That is completely fair and true. There are some atheists on here who can be pretty hateful. There are also some christians on here who can be pretty hateful.

I have a problem when a christian comes on and attacks evolution. It is science. It is science that has been studied by thousands of scientists over a couple of centuries. It is accepted and it is going to stay. It is the backbone of modern biology. Yet, some people will assault it and use the bible and convuluted reasoning as their weapons. That is when some atheists consider someone a little on the slow side.

I think many Atheists look on christians the same way that christians may look on muslims, or hindus.
You believe that your way is the ONLY way and so the people who believe in the other religions must be doing something wrong. Are they not smart enough to figure out that Christianity is the only way?
Can they not interpret religious texts the way they should be? Isn't it obvious? They must not be intelligent.

Christians are Atheists to every other religion but their own and most think of them the same way a full out Atheist thinks of Christianity.

It's all about points of view.

Now now, what makes you think you have everything figured out about atheists? Hold your horses a bit, there are as many sorts of atheists as there are many sorts of believers. I for one have never thought that believing in some god requires an IQ bellow some given value. You must have met the wrong atheists.

~~~Candace,,,, You are participating in an Open Forum outside of your church. I am sure that there are more jerks outside of your Moral Sanctuary than in. So if you want to participate within an MTV Demographic without your Dogma Police prescreening your questions so you don't encounter an immature jerk who happens to be an Atheist,,, then don't be so sensitive. There's plenty of Christian Jerks who feel the need to Prosylitize, Evangelize and smite all Heretics. I ignore them all. This is asserting your Freewill.
its not because you believe in a god that they call you stupid. its more the fact that at one point they believed in a religion or god, and that many of them read and researched what they believed. they questioned what they believe. and logically it makes no sense to them. and then when they ask questions that they had to christians, the christians beat around the bush, fail to answer, or call them names. in general christians look down upon people who question the bible, and look for knowledge.
note: not all christians do this. just quite a bit do.
