I haven't yet been to a dentist, that seems like the quick to bail out method, i'm 18 and my top 3rd molars haven't protruded but have a slight pain, half say its natural, the other half say its impacted. do i need an x-ray or what?

go in for a check up. It could hurt whether it's coming out straight or crooked, because it's piercing the gums, but if it hurts a lot chances are they're growing in crooked. Get an x-ray.

They always hurt when they are coming in, but you should get an xray anyway to make sure they are growing in CORRECTLY. Not everyone has enough room in their mouth for wisdoms to grow in straight, and if they grow in impacted then your other teeth will also pay the price. If you get an xray now, the dentist can tell you what to be prepared for and make a suggestion as to if you are going to need them extracted...my wisdoms all grew in impacted and ruined my other teeth because I waited too long~if you are going to need the extraction better to find out now rather than later! GOOD LUCK!!
PS Orajel gel (NOT liquid) can help dull the pain from the teeth cutting in, and if the tooth hasn't broken through yet, put it down in your jawline along the gums and that will help too...

Impacted molars mean that they are growing in & packing the rest of your teeth.

Its not the bailout method to have them removed--humans today aren't supposed to have wisdom teeth as even though our mouths grow them, the rest of our mouth has changed & we can't figure them into the equation.

It doesn't hurt very much to have them removed & they heal within 3-4 days.

YOU DON'T REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE A BABY GETTING YOUR FIRST TOOTH, BUT YOUR MOM DOES.

YOUR TEETHING, SO YES IT WILL HURT.
YOU HAVE TO GET A PANORAMIC X-RAY TO SEE IF THESE WISDOM ARE GROWING IN STRAIGHT OR IMPACTED.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DENTIST.
