You want to know my theory?
Because there are so many exceptions to the rules for the rich.
If we all could just pay evenly in sales tax, i think it would MUCH EASIER, AND MUCH FAIRER, AND EVERYBODY PAYS ACCORDING TO THEIR CONSUMPTION!!
what is yours? for or against the complication?

WELL TO THE SECOND ANSWERER, THE SALES TAX SHOULD NOT BE REGRESSIVE!
THAT IS MY WHOLE POINT, THE SYSTEM IS SET UP SO RICH PEOPLE DONT HAVE TO PAY TAXES, THEY CAN DONATE IT TO THEIR COUNTRY CLUB MEMBERSHIP INSTEAD!

Because the tax system gives power to the politicians and they are all about keeping power. There are breaks for real estate ownership, having kids etc. The politicos can campaign on "taxing the rich", "reducing the burden on the middle class", etc. etc. They can also give credits to the poor and redistribute taxes paid by others to those that have paid none. Since there are alot of poor people, thats alot of voters. Votes can be bought.
Truly, the "rich" pay most of the taxes in the U.S.
I'm 100% behind the consumption tax.
P.S. I fall into the "rich" classification by politicians so I pay ALOT of tax and use no government services save for roads and protection. I consider myself upper middle class and there are no tax breaks for me. I don't even get to deduct my home interest or charitable contirbutions since "I make too much".

No even tax paying across the board would be unfair so would regressive tax(the higher the income the less you pay).Poor ppl would be paying the same tax as the rich, so they would have less money to spend.I think progressive taxation(the higher the income the more you pay) is the best and in addition the extremely rich should be forced to give a percentage of there annual net income to some foundation(for the poor, help kids, the blind or any other charity). Now that would be Fair!! Take some pressure off poor ppl, so they have live comfortably too. The rich won't feel it.All they do is waste money and take coke, they do nothing good eith their money, spend it on foolishness and they still arn't happy.I would be so happy and not do some of the rubbish they do with their money, put it to good use and help out others who can't afford it, who are in real need of it.Life is co unfair.

Because a sales tax is regressive. It is not fair. It taxes the poor more than the rich. If the poor person buys a radio they pay say 6 dollars in taxes on the purchase. if a rich person buys the same radio they pay the same 6 dollars. It also taxes the rich less because people don't spend in proportion to thier income. A poor person might spend 90% of thier income each month, so they are paying taxes on 90% of thier income. Whereas a rich person won't spend 90% of thier income. They make too much money and simply don't need to spend such a high percentage.

we already do pay a sales tax in the UK...
Duty is charged on a lot of goods and also VAT.
We then also get taxed on income.
We also get another optional tax in the form of the national lottery (although at least there's a better chance of getting a rebate on that tax).
There are many more taxes we pay also depending on what we own such as road tax, council tax and television license to name a few of others.
This has been going on for hundreds of years, I doubt it will ever change.
I think the complicated taxes are to throw us off the scent of all the other taxes we are paying also.

the respond is that the tax device has this way of large form of brackets, to objective and make it straight forward, so as that the wealthy pay greater; in spite of if, this does not artwork simply by politcally inspired exemptions, which complicate it greater advantageous. The irony of your argument, given which you seem to have self assurance the wealthy could pay greater tax, is that the unfavorable finally end up paying greater with an excellent sales tax. If sales tax is 10%, then somebody earning $10,000, as they are in all probability to could desire to spend all of it as a manner to proceed to exist, could have 10% of earnings taxed, i.e. $1000. in spite of if, somebody earning $a hundred,000 won't could desire to spend all of it - realistically, they might spend $60,000. 10% of it somewhat is $6000 - basically 6% of their earnings. So the unfavorable is paying 4% greater advantageous than the wealthy person. this could be a simplistic occasion, in spite of if it makes you think of, huh?
