Most irradiation is done with X-ray machines. Irradiation can be in three basic dose sets- therapeutic (I irradiate cells in the lab all the time to simulate cancer therapy.) sterilizing-this is what can be done to food and if we weren't all scared of radiation, could prevent things like ecoli and salmonella poisoning. It could also be so high it killed US. and residual/side effect (like when you go through an xray at the airport, you are irradiated, but to get an image, not to irradiate you.)

It means to expose to radiation, and 90% of the time, it's xrays we're talking.
