I was the same way. Speak more often, the more you speak the less red you'll be. Besides, you might as well get used to it. Presentations are common in college.

If I knew of a way you could "get rid of it" I would tell you the sure way. I had the same problem when I was in school. Even if I knew 100% what the answer was, I would still get red. Its just that you know that all eyes and ears are on you, and you have the center of attention in front of people you don't know well.

I'm sure you have one or two friends in each class, so why don't you try making sure you try to look in their direction when its a comment so you feel like you are talking directly to them instead of a whole class. And when you are reading out loud, just read! Pretend you are reading to yourself. Take a deep breath before answering a question and make sure you know the answer WELL. You don't want to have a red face for answering out loud AND have a red face for looking dumb. Try to give yourself more confidence.

Hopefully it will stop on its own, but remember, you are not the only one. I think it stopped for me by my junior year of high school. Depending on how old you are, you are going to have to be patient. And most importantly, relax! Calm your nerves before speaking.

It's a case of stage fright.

Before you go infront of a crowd, decide on a happy place.
It sounds cliche'd, but it works.

Thinks of someone or someplace you'd RATHERR be, and mentally PUT yourself there.
Then magically once you start reading, or giving your presentation, it will go smoothly.

Something else my teachers always told me, is looking your audience in the eyes is really intimidating,

Look to the space on the wall behind your audience, right BELOW the ceiling.
Your too far away for them to see what your eyes are really focused on.
and it takes some of the presure off of you.

At first try, when you get up in front of your class, to imagine your feelings when talking to a stranger.
Give your class the same face that stranger would have.

It sounds as if you lack self confidence. Try the links below and practice. Once you've gained a bit more confidence you will be on a roll and actually enjoy speaking to the class.

When you speak you are conscious that you don't want to make a mistake in case people laugh at you, which in turn will make you more embarrassed. Believe me there is nothing to be embarrassed about. You will be fine next time you have to do it. The main thing to remember is that it is not the be all and end all. Have some fun and try and laugh at yourself! If you can do that then you won't mind anyone else laughing at you because you will be joining in with them and enjoying yourself. :) Good luck.

I totally sympathize w/you! My face used to turn red, but as I did speak in front of people more and more that part of it eventually stopped. I've been through college, so believe me, I've done a lot of it. I still don't like speaking in front of people because I absolutely hate all the attention being focused on me, but more experience helps some people to like it more. A technique to conquer fear that I saw on TV is to repeat over and over something that in your situation would be like "My face is going to turn red. My face is going to turn red." Then repeat "I want my face to turn red, I want my face to turn red" and the point is eventually you should get tired and bored w/the idea and not care as much. Obviously you wouldn't do it out loud. Just do it to yourself, and see if it works for you. Good luck! I know how you feel!

I am not sure if you are a teacher or student...

but in any case, sometimes it's best to just deal with things right up front, let your audience know, ok, I tend to blush really bad, so be prepared - and then smile. When you blush, sure they'll laugh but it's because you gave them permission and because you have a sense of humor about it.

Good luck!

I'm 38 and this still happens to me... I've never found a way around it other than putting yourself in that situation over and over, until it is no longer embarassing..

just smile and take your time. My friend was (is) like this and people still call him a tomato. But all he did was smile and people really liked him. (Now I wish i could turn red and be as popular as him)
