Free Will is a philosophical concept from the renaissance time period. It arose in opposition to determinism...which was a philosophical idea that stemmed from 17th century physics.

The term free will comes from religion. Deuteronomy explains it in Chapter 30 verses 14 -20 as a choice. The choice is made for either life or death. This is my opinion as to substituting the term instead of using choices. Free-will gives humans an excuse for the choices made. After all they say, Father God gave us free-will, and should have known we would make a bad decision. But to agree that we have a choice puts the blame squarely on our shoulders.

Free will may not be mentioned in the Bible but it is practiced....then and now.
Eve "chose" to disobey God and "chose" to eat of the fruit. She "chose" to listen to Satan. Adam, "chose" to do as Eve had done...knowing it would separate him from God.
Free will just became the term used to explain our ability to choose God. Just as the word Trinity is not found in the Bible but is the term used to describe the understanding of God being 3 in 1...God, Jesus and Holy Spirit.

Wikipedia has a good write up on this. See my link.
A decision must be made between predestination or free will.
The Bible does not give conclusive direction for either.

Neither the words nor the concept can be found, in my opinion. Deuteronomy 30 is a calling, it is not salvation in the hands of man.

The term "free will" stems in part from a verse of Scripture that describes the Word of God and it's acceptance by man as being "spiritually given, spiritually discerned". It means that the Spirit of God impressed the Word upon our minds as implied by the Scripture that says, "Thine Word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee", and also means that we have to make the CHOICE to receive it and live by it as implied by the verse that says in part, "Choose you this day whom you will serve....".

It comes from the ancient philosophers. It has been applied to the bible to explain why people can choose to obey God, or not.

While those words do not appear verbatim...read Deuteronomy Ch 30. It's all there in a nutshell.
