I have a 12 week shihtzu/maltese puppy.
I need to limit the morning feedings of this puppy because he is having accidents in his kennel.
So how about this - I feed him 3 times a day but I portion it.
So that he gets 1/2 of what he normally gets in the morning. A normal portion in the afternoon and the other 1/2 from the morning at night?
Would that be okay?
I also feed him treats at training but I try to limit it to just 10 or so small pieces.

the cage is not too big for sure. It's small to begin with plus blocked off.
and we do walk him after he eats. He goes once but normally goes again later.

Sounds like your cage is too big.

I doubt the size of his meals is the problemMore likely he is being left too long.
At 12 weeks a puppy doesn't have a strong enough bladder to go more than 2 or 3 hrs without going to the toilet. Most are not dry all night till they are 6 months old.
People see crate training as a quick fix to this but it is not it just causes the puppy pain by trying to avoid going as often as it physically needs too.

First he needs to go out every 3 hours at that age. A good rule of thumb is to take him out 1 hour for every month of age. Second the kennel should be just big enough for him to stand up sit down lay down and turn around comfortably, the reasoning is dogs dont like to mess where they are sleeping. It will also help to feed a high quality food, it is more nutritius so the dog will need to eat less of it and the less that goes in the less that comes out. I hope that helps.

I agree with above, your cage is too big, they usually will not poop where they have to sleep, so get a cage that is just big enough for him to lie down and stand up comfortably and that is it, he should not be able to walk around or anything. Also, try walking him for about 15 or 20 minutes after eating before putting him in the cage, he will eventually learn that its a routine... Good luck and enjoy the fun of having a new puppy!

My mom was a dog breeder for years. How she idd it was everytime a puppy wakes up from a nap & after it eats, it needs to go outside. Puppies are like babies. They have to develop bladder control. Since he has a small digestive system, he has to go to the bathroom more often. That's why small dogs are generally harder to housebreak than big dogs. Good Luck!

If you are having to feed 3 times a day then give 1 third at about 7am, another third at lunch time 1ish, and again at around 6pm. Actually at such a young age I would give him 4 feeds, 7,11,3 and 7pm.

my puppy is only 17 Weeks old and sleeps in a cage but when he go to 13 week i started leaving the cage open at night so if he wanted to go he would use the puppy training mat at the door.....now he sits at the back door when I'm in to go out...and if I'm not in he uses the mat...remember puppies can not hold it for long...

Train him to have a toilet, put a sheet of newspaper where he goes to the toilet, and then slowly move it every day. But ever so slightly.

Giving extra treats will make your dog fat! Reducing his main food by the equal amount of calories.
