Hey I'm Atheist too. Don't let anyone bring you down. Keep a firm root in your beliefs (or lack thereof) and if no one leaves you alone, then just ignore them.
It's pointless for anyone to tell you to believe in anything that you don't believe in. Like the Great Pumpkin. You wouldn't believe it that, would you?
Stay away from religion. It will not help you out.
All right, well Agnostic just means that you believe in a higher power and don't fall into religion. Still, don't let anyone drag you down! :)

You have my empathy. I was like that once too, and though I'm now a Christian and never looked back, I can understand how you feel.
Maybe you would feel better knowing that some religions have a duty to spread their word around, the idea being that if you have a wonderful gift, you should share it around. Of course, a lot of the time, the process of sharing it makes it not so wonderful after all. I remember the first time someone tried to evangelize to me - she was my sister's friend, aged 8, and said something like 'You Buddhists are black sheep and will go to hell'. I wanted to look her in the eye and tell her, 'We all know who's going to hell, little girl.'
And yes, religion has caused a lot of conflict, pain and death among man. However it is clear that religion is an indispensable part of people's lives. This is evidenced by the fact that only man, of all living beings, has an innate need for worship - being left alone, a civilization will develop some form of religion.
Finally, as an apologist (someone who defends the Christian faith from theological attacks) myself, I have been told by my mentor that fruit is to be picked only when it is ripe, not before, and that there is a time to reach out to people spiritually, and to try to force religion on them will do more harm than good. Maybe this was what you experienced. In any case, I'm sorry that you hate religion. Maybe time will heal all wounds... I'm not trying to evangelize here, just hoping that you will feel better about the topic in general.

Good job girlie!
I could not agree with you more. You pointed out VERY good reasons why organized religion is bad.
I do not why people do trust their instincts and feelings, but instead feel like they need some sort of guidance from religion.
I sort see what you mean regarding "guilt", but I have always seen it as a larger picture...morality. I HATE it when people say that when one does not follow a particular religion that the person is immoral. That is so false. Just because we do not follow that same creeds and "guidelines" of life does not make us immoral.
Keep fighting organized religion and do what makes you happy whether it is your own religious beliefs, agnosticism or atheism.

Many like you are disillusioned with organised religious preachings that often appear to contradict each other, create conflicts among people and contribute more to disharmony than peace, though a truly enlightened person will say that the great masters of each religion never meant their messages to divide people...
Let me cite a simple example. An allopath doctor with his array of diagnostic tools (like x-rays, scans, labs etc) and drugs treats many diseases; while a Homeopath with his simple sugar pellets sprayed with very dilute solution of some meds also cures people of diverse diseases; a third category, say a Pranic Healer also treats peole with complex problems by sending "cosmic energy" to sick bodies and achieves cures; a hypnotist treats some mental problems in his own way...
Every patient benefitted by a type of therapy starts hailing it as a great method, though each has its own good and limiting factors... Even so with religions, each has some valuable thing and certain messages may be intended for a certain group... There is no reason for the conflict... God likes to be sung in different tunes and followed in different ways.. Bigotry is often sown by the institutions of religions to keep people away from other denominations.. It is silly and not a mark of true faith... God can never be reahced by sowing hate and conflict..

ditto...i agree. Religion is the major cause (or it has been supplement in place of greed ) of wars. Honestly, if you got rid of ALL religions throughout the world and just practice humanity, morals and values without a higher power figure ppl would be more receptive and less likely to kill or harm "thy neighbor".
Its really easy to justify being mean or harming someone else when you can chalk it up to a belief system. If they don't believe in what I believe then they are WRONG and I can kill them for it. Hmmmmm...just doesn't sound right does it...but ppl who have a belief system don't see it that way. To me its sad.

Nobody is more non-religious than I, but I don't make a big deal of it. I will never deny being non-religious, and will sometime argue with anyone who tries to make me follow his beliefs.
I have good friends who are believers. They know that I'm a non-believer, so they don't bring up the subject. We remain good friends. There are a million subjects that could be talked about,"God" is only one.
Nope, I don't hate religion. I just think it's stupid. I'm just naturally not a hater of anything.

I am totally on your page. Nobody has ever needed a "book of rules" to be able to understand instinctively, and through our social training, that it just isn't a great idea to be going around doing bad stuff to other people, because sooner or later they are going to do it right back at ya. That is NOT a good survival strategy. LOL
Nor do I behave like a good, decent, honorable human being out of fear of eternal damnation in any lake of fire (or whatever). If see a little ole lady I do not feel like knocking her over the head and stealing her pocketbook. Not because I am afraid of any wrathful god, or being caught and put in prison. I don't do things like that because that is NOT who I am, and because that sort of behaviour sickens and appals me. I want to live by the rules of my society, and to be regarded as a good citizen, and not be rejected as a maverick and a wrongdoer. In short, I want to live my life worthy of being embraced as a loved and respected member of the "brotherhood of humanity"
One thing I do believe though, is that when you kind of put yourself out there as somebody who makes a real strong point of telling anybody who'll listen just how much you dislike "all religions and beliefs", it's like a red flag challenge to every wannabe "evangelist" to g et in your face and try to convert you to what THEY will tell you is the one and only "true faith", and how you had better get with THEIR program in a hurry in order to avoid "dying in your sins" and spending eternity wailing and howling and doing all the teeth-gnashing.
I find the best way to go is to just get on with your life, being the best person you can be, and there is no need for anybody to make a point of telling the world what he does NOT believe, or what religion he is NOT a member of. If a person happens to in an opinion forum like this one, and responding to the comments of others, then fine, you say your bit, and express your personal opinion on that issue. But out there in your everyday world, nobody asks you what you believe spiritually. You go to the bank, you go to the grocery store, you visit the dentist, you call the plumber etc. etc. etc. You do your particular business in that place or with that person, and the subject of what you believe or don't believe doesn't come into it. So keep it that way. If someone ever does mention in some social conversation...."are you a christian" or "do you belong to a church" or something like that. You respond as briefly as possible, and in a way that makes it perfectly clear that this is not a line of conversation you wish to pursue. That oughta do it.
If on the other hand, you go around volunteering to others that you "don't believe in this" or you totally disagree with that" in connection with religious beliefs, I guar-on-tee, you are going to attract all kinds of intense religionists like artists with a sackful of paints and paintbrushes to a blank canvass LOL. They just gotta get busy and fill that canvass with a picture of THEIR religious beliefs, and slap that paint as thick and heavy as they possibly can in hopes that it will stick and stay.
To sum it up.... if you don't build it, they WONT come.

If you study the Bible, you will understand that God's jealous love is not for himself, but because He wants all of you and for you to understand that false gods lead to your own destruction.
There is a great Bible study throughout the country and internationally called Bible Study Fellowship Intl. and is a study focused only on Bible verses and people from all walks go to it.
Seek out something like this and learn to have God answer your questions instead of relying on other people.
You'll NEVER regret it!!
God Bless!

The reason that ppl try to use you as a blank canvas is because the Bible tells us to preach the gospel and win souls. Most Christians will back off if you tell them you are offended by them trying to push you into their religion but there are always those that are fanactical. I am an Apostolic Chrisitan (aka Pentecostal) and if someone tells me I am offending them I back off because its impossible to win someone who you are offending! Good Luck!

Listen, Religion doesn't make people idiots.
People are good enough at that by themselves.
Religions are guides on how best to live your life, and how best to be as a person. No religion I know of is actively instructed by God to convert everyone they see.
The opposite is true.
God tells us in many religions to live and let live unless you are acted against. And even then it is your choice as to whether you act or not.
God forces you to do nothing.
What you are saying is like eating chicken that gave you food poisoning. The chicken is just a chicken. Its those who mistreated the chicken that gave you food poisoning. But you are blaming the chicken.
Do you see?
