Yes, they are. Only you need to have them (and all other electronic devices) off before take-off and landing. Turbulence is fine, no problem, just keep your seat-belt fastened.
Cell phones, 2-way pagers, and FM radios must remain off at all times in flight as they give off signals that interfere with the cabin's communications.
And the only reason that electronics (like Ipods) are not allowed during take-off and landing is that take-offs and landing's are critical times of flight and there their can't be anything that could possibly interfere with the pilots communications.
Even Ipods give off electromagnetic frequencies that can impair the pilots radios.
But yes, they are... and they're great.

Hey, ipods like most other electronic devices are allowed on board the airplane, and you are able to use them when flying. Like most every one else said, not during take off and landing. But i have never heard of turning them off during turbulance. If you ever have any questions on the subject, ask the pilot, or flight attendant when boarding the aircraft. (if you look hard enough you will sometimes see earbuds dangling around a pilots neck) but make note that cell phones must remain off during the entire flight. so enjoy your music!

According to a colleague of mine who works for the Transportation Security Administration, iPods are allowed on international and domestic flights. They will scan them through the X-ray machine to make sure they're not some type of fake bomb (don't worry; it won't hurt your iPod) and they may ask you to turn it on to confirm that it IS an iPod. Just remember that an iPod falls into the same class as all other portable electronic devices that must be switched off and stowed during takeoff and landing. So take your iPod and enjoy!

Except during take-off and landing (and possibly in an emergency) there is no problem.
