I have phoned the passport agency and the spanish consulate. You only need a valid passport to enter spain with no expiry requirements. You can get both phone numbers on-line.

You should be safe with Marbella if you are British or Irish. You only need a valid unexpired passport regardless of how long you have left.

If you have less than six months left on you passport, I suggest you go to Blackpool instead of abroad!
