Some Sphynx (hairless) cats are REALLY cute, but they're going to cost you quite a bit. I would go to the local Humane Society and get a kitty. If doesn't have to be expensive to be a great pet, and those pets need homes badly.
If you want a cat that's going to stay kitten-like you should try a ragdoll. They're so sweet and stay kitteny through their whole life.
I have a Bombay and an American shorthair. The Bombay is more like a dog than a cat and I love him to pieces.
Bengals are great cats too, they're crossbred with wild cats and end up being really big and vocal. They're cool and spotted.
Sphynx cats are very sweet and feel like warm fuzzy peaches.
Check out www.breedersclub.net and you will be able to find any pet you want.

I like tabbies. I have an orange one right now. Loves attention. Make sure when you get one adopt from a pet shelter. They do all the tests for you along with the spaying and neutering.
I know it sounds like beating a dead horse with the shelter thing, but there are so many great animals there that really need adopted, and that should always be a first option for dog or cat purchase.

I've never concerned myself with cat breeds- though I suppose you would call mine American Shorthairs. I would just take the kitten, rear and train him, and not think of the rest. While cats shed and some can get rambunctious, I've never seen anything that shows one breed is better than another.

Check out your local dumb friends league or shelter most of them have websites and you can find wonderful cats there. Go for looks first then go visit the cat in person - some are wonderful and only there because there owners just could not care for them any more.

Unique you say... i personally like the bald kitty's. my neighbor has one and whenever i see it in the window it looks like an Egyptian statue. But anyways...
Here are some breeds i suggest you check out for uniqueness;
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/profiles/cornish.html
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/profiles/japanese.html
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/profiles/egyptian.html
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/profiles/scottish.html
take a look around that site... if your going pure bred then you can be pickier about what personality your cat will likely have; vocal, cuddly, aloof etc. Decide whats best for you (ie. do you want a cuddle bug, a mouser, or a quite cat..) then look at breeds who are prone to those behaviors.. calculate in whether you like their look, if the breed has common health concerns, and whether they are suited to your home.. then look at availability and cost and you should have a pretty short list of kitty's to consider...

alright well see your issue here is 99% of domesticated cats are perfect for at home, it depends on the color you want, the face shape, and thats about all. it mainly depends 100% on the cat, not the breed. just go to a shelter and find one that is nice and wants attention.

Gulfstream is right. Adopt your cat from a shelter. There are lots of great cats there that need a good family.

You don't BUY A CAT!
Go to the animal shelter and save one from death row....He will love you unconditionally the rest of his life.
They are healthy and have had all their shots...
A small price to pay to save the animal from a gas chamber.
Everytime someone buys a domestic animal, they have killed one in the shelter.
No I am not PETA...They are nutcases!
I just respect animals.

Chartreux cats are absolutely wonderful. They are best known for their dog-like behavior (i.e. they will respond to you when their name is called and they will fetch objects that you throw) And they are beautiful cats as well!
