They felt as though the negroes of the time were made for just that, slavery. They were different and the white did not accept that. They actually brought them with them from Europe and the "tradition" continued in the colonies until the Civil War.

chances are people aren't going to answer this question because it's kin of a taboo topic. i sure wouldn't want anyone to think that i have ANY positive ideas about the instution of slavery. even if i was just noting the public opinion of the time!

try this -

google the term "pro slavery"

or go to ask.com and type in "what were the pros of slavery?"

but if you're doing a project on frederick douglass, focus on him - he was an extrodinarily brilliant man - don't spend a lot of time on the "other side"

also - check out information on Col. Robert Gould Shaw - who led an all black volunteer company in the civil war. frederick douglas was a supporter - you might find some interesting connections

www.us-civilwar.com/shaw.htm

you'll get lots of answers for your project.

Cheap Labor. I'm guessing you are talking about the US, but there is actually quite a history of slavery. Check the link, interesting read.

Cheap labor is the main reason. It depends on which country and period of time you are asking about. Wikipedia has a good quick reference on the history of slavery.

The southern plantation owners NEEDED slavery to be profitable. It is no different than employers today hiring illegals to do their work.

Supporters of slavery had justifiable reasons. Find them on link below:

In those days there were not a bunch of Mexicans sneaking over the border to get work in the farms.

Slaves were brought in to work the plantations, there weren't enough non slaves willing to do the work.

i guess they thought that slavery means control and control means power and power means getting respected.
slavery ---> Control ----> Power -----> Respect!
i think they wanted to get respected in order to have a decent life despite their behaviors or bad qualities...etc.
or...
maybe because slavery was too cheap to be true , having a slave means , no cost , and doing all the hard work.
that was a time where freedom had no definition.

i hope that was helpful,
Good Luck.. :-) !
