I experienced the same thing. After 4.5 years being best friends, I finally found out friendship was not enough and my feelings for him were deeper... But he politely refused, sush a slight refusal that I did not recognise and thought he liked me too. He was afraid of losing a friend like me... but our friends told me all and now I accept friendship, nothing more. He was such a weird guy but very very cute in treating to people.
