I am no racist by any means, but as a server i do notice certain trends. I'm not saying that all black people don't tip and i'm not saying that all white people tip well, but it's hard to ignore the facts when i get a 50 cent tip on a $30 check or a $1 tip on a $45 check. Servers live on their tips. we make $2.13/hr and need tips to survive. If anyone can give me some insite into this it would be appreciated.

The truth must come...

...it seems that it must be a culture thing. When they were slaves, they didn't get tipped either. Too many blacks take advantage of what happened to their forefathers, people they really didn't even know.

I didn't know that this was a large scale phenomenon, but I don't see this as racism as some slacks that have responded to your question.
I don't know why some people don't tip, regardless of race, but I wouldn't let it bother you. Yeah, its a slight, but letting it get to you is not the answer. It will just put negativity into your thoughts and eventually your actions. That will lead to poorer performance and to less tip money even from more generous customers. Just get past it and move on to the next table.
Hope this helps!

This reminds me of a Curb Your Enthusiasm episode. Larry David (white guy) having lunch with a black guy. They finish lunch, black guy left a skimpy tip. White guy didn't think it was enough and left more money on the table. Black guy caught him and accused white guy of being racist. Boo-freakin-Hoo. Maybe it IS a trend.

I've heard from so many people, not racists, that this is pretty common. Hopefully you just give them the best service you can anyhow. Maybe they think because they're black they are automatically getting bad service. I always overtip to make up for bad tippers. My stepdad never tips enough in my opinion. I leave extra after he's left the table!

You are SO right! I've known about this for many years. An old college professor (20+ years ago) told me that this was the reason one of the better restaurants in our college town could not keep decent wait staff.

Not sure how to change it. Think it's a cultural thing, so it probably wouldn't be PC to discuss openly.

Sorry you've had that experience. Can you find another job in a different restaurant? Or flip a quarter to share the burden of any regular non-tippers among the wait staff?

the industry that you are in has really got a screwy payscale.....i feel that you guys should make minimum wage and receive no tips...if the restaurants want to add gratuity to the check then fine but they better not call it that otherwise they wont get it....a gratuity is defined as a gift of money...it is not my duty to supplement your income....i provide a service to the public by preparing taxes and i charge a flat fee for the service...my income does not get supplemented with tips.....you have a choice in your profession much like i do and i choose not to work for tips.....i will tell you though that i am not one of those people who tip based on performance....i tip 10-20% regardless unless it is blatent laziness and i cant even believe youre playing the race card....dont you think thats been worn out already?

I was a waitress too and I didn't notice this trend. But we should break it up into races but people in general.

mmm... intersting im here in vegas, same thing would happen to us but when we were hosting a party!!! we would do so much work for them (take their gifts to their car, cut their cake, pass it out keep pitchers filled...) and they would tip us $5 or almost always nothing!!!! It would make me so mad, so i understand what you mean, but i dont have an answer.

because they know you're thinking it when you give them the bill and snicker on the side, giving them the look. doesnt really matter if someones gray black or white. don't you think that maybe your service sucks?
