The 3 most popular free antivirus software programs are Antivir, Avast and AVG. PC World Magazine tested all 3 antivirus programs as well as several commercial antivirus programs. Of the 3 free antivirus programs, Antivir had the best detection and removal rate. However, each of the 3 free programs have their pro's and con's. Antivir might have the best detection and removal rate but it does not scan incoming e-mails while the other 2 have this feature. Avast came in second out of the 3; however, you have to register every 4 months to continue receiving updates while the other 2 do not. AVG requires the least amount of memory and resources; so, it is a good choice for older computers. However, AVG has the lowest detection rate of the 3. If you use an e-mail account which already offers virus scanning (e.g Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail), I recommend Antivir. I have used for a couple of years now and it is a good antivirus program.
