Well, who else is gonna do it? I went because it was the right thing to do. The men in my family all served as far back as we could research and I wasnt about to be the one who let that tradition die. Granted, we are in a whole different arena now. However, this is not a war by histories standards, this is a skirmish, not even a police action. The rules have to be written as we go along because we have never dealt with this type of "warfare" in the past. Well, thousands of years ago we did. The pride one takes in serving in the military is something that no one can take from you, not even the peace hippies.

Well, I can tell you that some- a very few- volunteer because they think it's like hollywood. You come back with medals and patches and all the women fall at your feet and people call you a hero and you get to brag about how you single-handedly saved your platoon, etc.
Most who volunteer do it out of a feeling of patriotic duty. If our nation is at war, they want to do their part.
I can tell you from being in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom that all the medals in the world (I have 9) don't make you a hero, women don't fall at your feet, and if you single-handedly saved your platoon, good for you, but I probably won't believe you when you tell me about it.
I didn't volunteer for either tour. I was in a unit that got activated each time. I went because it was my duty as a military man to do so.
I am proud of my service and am continuing to serve even now with 25 years behind me.
The risk of being killed or wounded is one you take when you sign the paper to be in the military.
You can be killed or wounded driving your car to work, repairing your roof, changing a light on a ladder, etc. Life has no guarantee, so to be in the military is no more a risk that leaving your house each day if you look at the stastistics of death and injurys.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

Trying to keep the peace whilst serving under one objective all the same,
Doing all of this at a minutes notice without ever knowing of their name.
The soldier’s rank makes no difference, each one is protecting us one and all,
For what ever their mission in parts unknown, the task at hand can be great or small.
I will always remember the sacrifices these brave men and women have made,
For it is the ultimate selfless act that those soldiers departed have dearly paid.
That faceless soldier to us all nevertheless, but in our hearts we all feel the pain,
Fathers, mothers, wives and husbands continue to pray faces showing all the strain.
Time stands still as their loved ones leave for a task that will advance their youth tenfold, We are over here fighting with no quick end.
We are dying and defending foreign land
With miserable heat and never ending sand we are fighting for you'r freedom!! Lucky enough to be born free,
a God-given right of ALL humanity.

The soldiers who 'volunteer' to fight in Iraq have a deep love and devotion for the country which gives them the freedoms they have.
They have come to the decision that they want to defend every innocent man, woman and child, including their own, from those which seek to take away those freedoms!
As they say....Freedom is NOT free!
Thank a veteran or active duty soldier!
Thank You JS!!

I joined and have done 3 tours to Afhganistan 2 to Iraq, because I love my country no matter what! I would give my life for the freedoms our citizens enjoy. I would like some of the military bashers to spend 3 day in either of the two countries, and then see how much they count their blessings!!!

Here are the facts:
1) Many people join the military as a way to get out of their present problems or to get the training and college benefits.
2) However, the majority of people joining the military do so because they believe they are doing a moral, righteous act fighting for this country.
The problem with #2 is that, these people have been propagandized to join the military so they can fight in Iraq.
Let me explain ...
These troops mostly come from the heartland and the south of the United States. They do not realize that the America their dad grew up in, the AMerica that their grand-father fought for -- is DEAD.
America is owned by multi-national corporations. Corporations have bought off politicians and can blackmail politicians by funding their opponents. Thus your political power as a citizen is marginalized.
My point is, these troops don't realize it, but they're fighting to open up the Middle East so 10 years from now their can be a Starbucks coffee shop in every neighborhood. And so these Middle Easterners can make Microsoft even more rich by using his software. That's what this is all about.
If the US were serious about the war on terror, we'd close the border immediately. (Muslims are definitely pouring in through the border.) We'd check all cargo from cargo ships instead of just 5% of cargo. Bush wouldn't have pushed to have given a Muslim country oversight of unloading cargo off foreign cargo ships. Also, ask yourself this question. "Does it make sense that if we're fighting radical Muslims, then why are we bringing in tens of thousands of them to settle throughout the United States?" Keep in mind these Muslims are baby-producing machines. They have 4 kids minimum. Many muslim men purposely create 4 kids, divorce that woman and move on to the next woman to repeat the process.
Our troops simply do not realize these facts nor would they want to believe that our politicians are rotten to the core.

Duty, Honor, and Country. There are too many people in America that have forgotten that there just Might be something out there that's larger than themselves. I am thankful that there are still a few young people that aren't so selfish to serve for the rest of us! Thanks alot, Ladies and Gentleman of the Armed Forces!
